Thanks to Richard for finding these previews of Lost’s 100th Episode “The Variable”. An interesting name that ties directly back to the episode entitled “The Constant”. It looks to be a great one.
Farraday tells Jack that it is not his destiny to be back on the island, and in fact, he shouldn’t be anywhere near it.
Juliette looks to be packing her things and leaving to head back to the beach camp. Sawyer asks if she still has his back, she asks him the same thing – with a doubtful tone.
Farraday meets up with Dr. Chang and tells him that he needs to evacuate the island due to what’s sure to be “the incident” that we’ve been hearing about forever. He tells Chang he knows this because he’s from the future. Too bad we cant see Chang’s face to see how he reacted to hearing that.

only problem with Daniel is that he is not convincing. i mean if a weak, thin guy came to you and told you about the incident and then supports the theory by saying that he comes from the future, how would you react ? exactly!
Also, Daniel should not waste his time: what happened, happened. he cannot change the course of things

Julietee seems worried that Sawyer is going to dump her. I also wonder about Daniel telling Jack that he does not belong there.
Poor Jack. Although Eloise may have told him that going back was his destiny, I still think he went back because John told him about his father being alive, and because he saw his dad (at his office right before he started popping pills).
I certianly hope he starts taking a larger role in this series, as he is mostly MIA this season, and has not really served any purpose.
totallylost, i fully agree with you. i watched some past episodes of lost and Jack has changed SO much! before he was the leader, the decision maker… no he is like a guest star in the show! geez…

I do have a question though- Jack in the beginning has been let’s get to it kind of guy and has thought through some serious problems…. This season he has acted like a punch drunk prom date…. okay whatever type attitude…WTF.
I’ve really enjoyed this season don’t get me wrong it just seems his role has taken a little siesta so to speak. I hope he picks up speed in the next few weeks.

I ususally enjoy the episodes with Faraday involved, looks like tonight should be no different.
I find it very strange that Sawyer says, “I’m going back to the beach”. At first I thought he was talking about the beach camp the 815 losties made but that is impossible since that is not there yet (they are in 77 so it never happaned yet) I guess he could mean that he is going back to where the sub is or any other beach for that matter but I just found it strange.

i think he meant the sub for sure. there are so many characters that have been lost in this season….no pun intended. jack, locke and desmond are rarely in it.
I agree with what everyone is saying about Jack. what happened to him to make him really not care anymore. It seems like he just doesn’t care what happens to him.so sad. I loved Jack!! Also what’s up with his tattoo, didn’t they confirm that it meant something like a leader who walks amoung us but it not truely one of us. Is that correct? I really hope that this comes into play later. I like Jack being in charge, it just feels weird with Sawyer calling the shots here.

It’s my belief that the ones in 1977 will go to the beach because of whatever is going to happen at the Dharma site. Also this could possibly explain what happens so that there are no more babies being born on the island also.

From the clip with Jack and Daniel it makes you think that Daniel had other plans when he directed Desmond to his mother. Maybe Daniel thought his mom would help Desmond get back to ’77, but that he would be alone.

It definitely looks as though tonight’s episode will give us some answers as far as where Daniel has been (Ann Arbor), and what he was working on there (Research for Dharma? Research for himself?).
Because of the connection between a “constant” and a “variable” I am also hoping that Desmond is around tonight, but the previews didn’t give us any scenes of his.
With so little episodes left, I really feel that we need some consistency in each week’s episodes answering the lingering questions, so that we can focus on the big picture next year!

Adam, I am 100% sure that Ms Hawking is Faradays mother. I also know who his father is, if your interested, but I think they will show us tonight anyway. I def think there was another reason for Faraday sending Desmond to visit his mother. the strange thing was that he knew excatly where she was at. I wonder if she is the one that helped the freighter people find the island as well , I’m with Roni on that he asked him to go there thinking that he would go back to 1977 with the rest of them, for some unknown reason. I mean Faraday wasn’t even there at the time, he left and has been in Ann Arbour for 3 years.wow I just contradicted myself.but I guess he asked him before he had left the island, so it could still be a possibility.

First- Faraday can’t be dead. if the island healed his mind wouldn’t it heal his body…. Also he and Sawyer haven’t made the video with Dr. Chang yet from comic con…..
Second- It was nice to see jack find his pair and start taking some leadership.
Third- Do you believe Eloise wanted Jack there to maybe save her son that’s why she told him it was his destiny???
Finally- Hurley’s little clips last night were great. I’m glad he’s still there. It feels like it’s starting to pick up speed again. I can’t wait for next weeks.
On the Letterman piece Matthew Fox says the cliff hanger will be more intense and a lot of people will be anxious for the next season…..

This episode was really good but a bit head wrecking. Is daniel dead? With the glassy eyes at the end and the dodgey bullet wound it looked like he was definitely dead but doesn’t he have other things to do? Like convince Chang and make the video?
I’m surprised at how messy sawyer and Juliet let things get. Sawyer is supposed to be a great con man and he and juliet have kept up cover stories and integrated themselves for 3 years but they seem to ‘forget’ to come up with a reasonable excuse for bens disappearance or figure out what to do with Phil? He came to talk to sawyer, sawyer could have spoken to him or lured him outside of dharmaville? Or SOMETHING! Punching him and stuffing him in a closet seems like the way to go if you’re looking for a quick getaway but they don’t seem like they wanted to go and they have nowhere to go!
I was a little disappointted but tonights clue-daniel comes clean with what he knows about the island. He didn’t come all that clean! And is he supposed to have been sick up until he came on the frieghter?
I think eloise might have bought into that cult obey the island thinking that the others seem to have. Remember whn Mikhail shot the girls in the looking glass? One of them said when you start questioning things it all goes wrong, he agreed and killed her. I guess asking questions is bad so you should just do what you’re told.
How come eloise is off the island? And making no attempt to get back?
Juliet seems very insecure about sawyer? I guess she feels kate is his big love and she had him while kate was gone or something. The love square thing seems to have come to an end, jack doesn’t seem interested in either juliet or kate!
I’d love to know what sawyer meant when he asked miles is he still crazy about faraday!
So i’m guessing the incident everyone refers to is the energy release at the swan? Interesting to find out that pushing the button wasn’t just a fools game.
I think we all guessed widmore wa sdaniels father a while ago, i’d love to know what happened there. How old is daniel? Should he be born in 77? We know widmore was banished for having a child with an outsider, how would eloise have left?

RICHAR, I thought the same thing about Daniel. He didnt make the video with Dr Chang yet so how can he be dead?
But as soon as he was shot, I knew it was his mother that did it. My only questions are, 1) Why was Richard telling him that Ellie wasnt there, when she clearly was? and 2) why would Daniel go into the Hostile camp armed and hot, the way he did. If you were just looking to talk to Ellie, you go in reasonably. If he was looking to get shot, you go in aggressive and start threatening the leader.
This can only lead me to believe that Daniel planned to be shot, and that he isnt dead, but just taking the next step in his necessary process of things that are supposed to happen.

Also, TOTALLYLOST, I was on vacation in NY/NJ visiting family. Luckily it was the same week that Lost wasnt on, so I didnt have to miss it.
I assume that this is why dr chang kicked out miles and his mother? To get them to leave before disaster struck, so surely daniel will have to convinve them of it?
Also regards the beach vs the sub, i think the did mean the beach they originally crashed at. They have nowhere to go, might as well go to where they are familiar with.
I’m also wondering while eloise pushed daniel so much into his science? Correct me if i’m wrong but he didn’t really accomplish anything so i’m assuming he has something that will be very important for him to accomplish and thats why eloise pushes him?

Something that I can’t stop wondering about is what Ms Hawking said to Penny in the hospital. something like, this is the first time when I don’t know what is going to happen next, reguarding Desmond pulling thorough. So I’m thinking that something has def changed this time around. like maybe they can change the future. I mean Faraday seemed convinced when he got back from Ann Arbor that you can change things, seeing as how he wanted to try and stop the incident so that the swan wouldn’t be built and oceanic 815 wouldn’t crash. I wonder what changed his mind ?

I would think that Ellie pushed Daniel because she knew that eventually he would save the island or the people on it. After all with out all this time travel and other knowledge he wouldn’t have been able to convince Chang to evacuate the island.
I don’t think Daniel is dead, like other people have said he still needs to create the video with Chang etc. and besides shooting somebody seems like a very bad way to try to kill someone, ex Locke shot by Ben and lived, Ben shot by Sayid and lived.

during the previews for next week it shows Jack and co. in a place that looked similar to the temple maybe they bring Daniel there similar to what happened to Ben.
Oh and it was so nice to finally see some kind of action from Jack, I like him and Kate working together. someone said before that Jack doesn’t seem at all interested in Juliet or Kate, but I think that whatever happens he will ALWAYS have Kate’s back.
and I don’t like the whole Sawyer and Juliet thing, what the hell is that all about? I mean they do know that the purge will happen and everyone will die, how long did they think that they could go on like this, they’re all pissed off that the ’06 came back and are blaming them for all the things that are going wrong, I mean were they expecting to die? I thought Sawyer has always said that he will find a way to survive. their relationship is pissing me off!!!

wouldn’t that be cool if they took Farady to the temple like they did with Ben and he becomes a hostile. maybe that’s the real reason why Eloise wanted Faraday to get to the island, because she was a hostile and remember what Richard said to Kate and Sawyer about Ben that he will always be one of them, so I’m assuming that if they do the same to Faraday that he will always be one of them too.
Daniel is definately NOT dead. Now, Ellie may think that he is dead which may explain her “sacrifice” speech when she slapped Widmore, but he is not a gonner. Besides, he was way down on the deathwatch list.
How did widmore get to LA so fast?? If he had been there when Ben called him to say he was going to kill Penny, he would have sent some goons to stop him, or at least get him after.
LoLo- Great point about Sawyer being kind of dumb with putting Phil in the closet instead of luring him outside, etc. Also, why did Radzinsky just “barge” into Saywers house after the shootout, and let him wander down the hall to find Phil. Come on Sawyer!!! At the minimm he should have said to Radzinsky “let’s go find them” and run for the door to get them out of there.
Moohaha- Great point about Daniel intending to get shot, or maybe he knew it would go down that way. She will probably listen to him in a weakened state instead of with a gun in his hand.
Lolo- Also, great question as to why Eloise is not trying to get back to the island. Maybe she is permanently banished like Charles, but supposedly so was Ben but here he is.
My most important question is what would happen if Daniel succeded in detonating the bomb??
Would they all skip back to 2004, or to 2008, would the plane land in LA, would Kate be in jail, would Claire, Boone, Shannon, Echo, Anna, Libby, Nikko, Paolo, Michael and Charlie all be alive? Would they have memories of the island or not. Somehow that does not ring right, and my head is spinning. I guess I need to wrap my head around this thoery.
Once again I felt like there was more story to be told than the time allowed to tell it. I felt like there were big gaps in what we were finding out. What caused Daniel’s memory loss? Was it the time travel that turned his brain to mush or was it the grief that he felt due to what happened to Theresa? Did Theresa have the headaches and the nose bleeds like Charlotte? Is that why Daniel recognized the symptoms? When was Daniel healed? We know he had some memory problems while on the island (they make reference to it when they are jumping from one time to another), so when did the “healing” take place?
How do you guys know that Daniel made the videos with Chang?

Just in case we are not talking about the same video, I am talking about the one were Chang says that he is communicating with people 30 years in the future and says that a credible source has told him that they communicate via the internet and George W. Bush is president.
Adam, I am with you. Why didn’t jack and Kate pump Daniel for information, especially given how evasive he was in the future. It is just like Sawyer not asking Kate and Jack how they got back to the island. Instead he acted like a male lion protecting his territory.

It was implied last night that Faraday tried the time travel on himself and then on his girlfriend. I assumed something went wrong and that’s why she was in a coma. It would then be assumed that’s why Faraday was excused from Oxford and he has went a little nuts.
It showed Sayid for the next episode so I would guess that would be an answer on “hey where have you been? Hove you shot anyone lately?”
It also showed Ben and Locke so the next episode looks to be a great one…… any chance they’ll just take two weeks off and start season 6????

Alex: Moving on to more show, or so to speak, related questions. In the special alternate reality game The Dharma Project from last year. A lot of fans want to know, since basically funding was pulled out of the Dharma project last year, what was going to be the final revelation of The Dharma Project? Since The Lost Experience was about the numbers, and Find 815 was about the fake wreckage, so, what was going to be the final act of The Dharma Project?
Damon: Essentially the whole idea was to signal to the audience that our characters: Jack and Kate and Sawyer and Hurley and Juliet and Sayid were going to end up in Dharma times, and Faraday too, sorry, and Miles of course, strongly imply that our characters were going to appear in Dharma times. So that would be something that would be sort of set up in the Internet experience. I think some people believe that they hear Faraday’s voice in the Comic-Con experience. These events are sort of partially canon but more promotional than they are canon. Giving the audience a sneak peak as to what the season is about.

Im saying right now that if Faraday is in fact dead, than we, as fans, have been ripped-the-fuck-off!!!
As well as if what Farady was proposing happens, in that they prevent the hatch from being built, and 815 from crashing, and they try to end the show as if none of the preceeding events ever occured, none of the characters ever really met, and it all essentially becomes “reversed” than I will never watch TV again, having been ripped off by my favorite show of all time.
We can only hope that the shows producers do not intend to go this route, as it will destroy all the show has built for the past 5 years.
Ok, Im done ranting for now.
But please tell me most of you agree that if the show does this, then you will feel as cheated as I will.
what I still don’t get is why did Faraday tell Desmond his mother was at Oxford, and when he went there of course we find out he’s not there and neither is his mom, so my question is did I miss the part where Desmond found out Ms Hawking was actually in LA. How did he know where to go?
Also, something I noticed when young Daniel was playing the Piano, there was a pendelum on the piano. Could this be a hint that Faraday actually was the one who designed the Lamp post station as Im sure some have speculated?
My first thought was that he could have been the “mathematician” who designed the lamp post, my 2nd thought, (since he was playing the piano) was that maybe he was the “musician” who programmed the code into the looking glass.
However my 2nd theory doesnt seem as likely as the first, any thoughts?

Widmore gave him the address and Des took off for LA
Moohaha- I kind of said in Post 61 what you said in post 72. What would happen if Daniel succeeded??? And, I agree with you– If they go the route of the whole island thing never happening, I am so done as well. In fact, I may even go to Hawaii and protest.

I am hopeful that LOST will end in a way that gives me tears or goosebumps or both! The writers/producers have said that we the viewers, can not possibly know how it will all end, based on what we have seen up until this point.
I do worry though, as much as I love reading other fan’s thoughts, theories, and snippets that they picked up that I didn’t – am I going to be disappointed when a big climax occurs and I had already read something to the same effect?
I would imagine that there are fans (that don’t visit these sites) that gasped at the realization that Chang was Miles’ dad, and yet it has been back and forth on this site since that first scene of Chang waking up in his bed earlier this year.
I have to admit though, I thought that Daniel and Penny would be cousins.

however, one big question rises: how is it possible the Dan dies?? that would destroy the what happened, happened theory. Ok he did explain something about the variables and their past being their actual present, but still. that would turn the whole theory invalid…

I hope he’s not dead but Ms Hawking sure was pissed at Widmore for making a way for Faraday to get back to the island, but remember she told Penny that she doesn’t know how things are going to go anymore. Maybe somehow Faraday has already changed the events that are going to happen.

Why Faraday was so surprised to see Jack and Co. back in 77 and so sure concerning his mother being wrong about Jack? Dis he realize that something had been changed?
Could he see flashes from the future and mind travel to the past like Desmond? Surely yes.Thats why he was crying watching the O815 crash?
Maybe he realized you cant change the past, but being them the variables in that past and being them in their present, they can change their future…
By the way, if Widmore and Hawking have blue eyes, shouldnt he have blue/green eyes too? And british accent?
Jack will be in charge from now on, and probably try to continue Dan’s plan to explode the bomb. Like already said, can they erase all the chain of events that happened and led them to the island? Isnt it the major paradox?
Are we finished with Desmond’s story? I hope not! I guess he was not been well explored this season, for he is always so great.

Did she make him go to the freighter to fullfill that destiny? Or to try and change it?
She could easily avoid him from going, as he didnt want to.

I’m sorry guys but the writters just released a statement saying that Faraday is indeed dead, although we have seen people die and they either come back to life (Locke) or we see the dead again, hence Christian, Charlie, Boone, Shannon, well theres just too many.but his status has went from full time to possibly guest star.

It’s episodes like this that keep me watching! There’s a real sense of events getting dangerously out of hand and the whole situation snowballing…
Although if Faraday is now dead (and I still think we’ll still see him in flashbacks performing experiments on himself and Theresa) the way he went out was disappointingly out of character.
The Daniel Faraday I’ve been watching for the last two seasons was a mild-mannered physicist (by the way, I loved Radzynski’s line, “I’ve been shot by a physicist!”) and wouldn’t have gone strutting into The Others’ camp waving a piece around. It seems to me they were running out of episode time and had his mum kill him quickly (for the shock ending), but in a less-than-believable way.
And anyway, what about Richard Alpert? He didn’t claim to recognise Faraday when he bust into the camp, but how do you forget someone who appears in the nineteen fifties, tells you he’s from the future to defuse your H-bomb and then vanishes into thin air, especially someone as distinctive as Dan?

Why the hell would they strive to make him such a big/mysterious character, ahve him finally evolve into a major player of sorts, then disappear, come back for one ep, then get smoked? That sucks. He should have plenty more interesting parts to his backstory that would be of value to the show. I hope he returns in some capacity, but im still bummed to see him killed off so abruptly. Unless it was part of his masterplan, if so, genius.
Time will tell.
Oh, one more thing, I totally thought when penny went in to see Des, that Hawking was gonna nab the kid and run off. Im not sure why, I just thought that Penny was gonna come back and Charlie was gonna be taken.

Jonathan, post 83. He was surprised because Jack and co left the island in the present (or future) back at 2008. While Faraday and co started time travelling. See, jack never time travelled, so quite impressive that he managed to go back in time.
My guess is Daniel was extremely upset with Charlotte’s death that he went back with the sbu and then came back – but all in being in the past.

I agree having Faraday die like that is kinda whack. I did like the episode as a whole but I could have used a bit more of the story from Faraday’s perspective. Like what he did when he was gone for three years??? WTF!!

I def thought Hawking was taking young Charlie as well. My first thought was why are you not bringing your son with you after someone tried to kill all of you???

She knew he was going to go back and try to stop the crashing of 815. For whatever reason she wants that to happen. So Dan has to die. In my opinion her and Ben are working together to get the plane to crash. If that doesnt happen then something else (which we don’t know yet) won’t happen (possibly beneficial to ben and ellie). So 815 needs to get to that island…..Or maybe someone specific needs to get there.
Ben and Ellie are def working together. Possibly out of the hatred for Charles. To me Charles is the good guy here and based on Ben and Ellie previously working together and both of their actions they are the bad guys.

The short clips we saw during commercials are for a show called fast forward. A show by the Lost people also. The premise from what I understand is people black out for a few minutes and see small clips like we did. Those clips are those peoples future and they try to piece together what is going to happen….hence the ” What did you See?”

you know, the more the time goes by, the more i think that Ellie Hawking is evil and that Widmore is more of the good guy! good observation on Faraday’s eyes not being compatible with Ellie and Charles. I did have a friend before whose mom and dad had brown eyes and she had blue eyes. so guess that could happen.
I am also positive that Dan created the pendulum. and also much and much sure that Ben and ellie are working together, how could them not work together! Ellie has some sort of grudge against widmore and ben came to ellie at the church when she showed Jack & Co. the pendulum

yeah I’m not so sure if Ben and Elloise are working together,remember when Penny asked her if Ben was her son, she had a look of disgust on her face, like she couldn’t stand him. (but really who does like Ben, I guess that’s not a good reason to support my theory).
but I was wondering the same thing, why does he not have an accent, when everyone around him that he grew up with does. and the eye thing, I got nothing on that.
oh and I rewatched the episode last night and someone had asked if while Faraday and his mum were having lunch was the Arija airline symbol was there, and I gotta tell ya it looked to me like just a picture on the glass behind them of an indian temple like the ones in Alladin ( sorry reffering to a disney movie here) but ya know the big builing they have there like the Taj Ma hall. ( did I spell that right?)

Thanks for the link, I guess that confirms it, although I don’t like it. The only good thing left over from this is that I think Jack and Kate still have Faraday’s journal and hence possible answers (no more of the not asking questions and just going along for the ride anyway). I hope Faradays left over story is told in his journal and that the Losties can make sense of it.
I also just remembered that Miles (and I guess Hurley too) can talk to dead people, so Faradays story may not be lost yet.
Jones that’s excatly what I was thinking. that maybe the reason widmore wanted Miles to go to the island is because he knew also that Ellie was going to shoot Faraday so he brought someone that could talk to dead people like Miles , maybe it’s just a coiencidence that Doc Chang is his dad.
i just remember a funny scene of this episode! Faraday telling Chang about him coming from the future and then saying “Miles is your son” and Chang having a funny/ackward look in his face “IS this true?!” hahahaa – totally unreal!
