The Shape of Things to Come | Thoughts?

I have to say I thought this was a really good episode. The lack of action in Meet Kevin Johnson was more than made up for in the first episode back from the writers strike. Here is a quick run-down of some of the main points. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d recommend you stop reading now.

  • Apparently Ben can time travel and he’s a badass with a club
  • We saw how and why Sayid began working for Ben
  • We learned who shot Rousseau and Karl.  They proceed to put a bullet in Alex’s head.
  • Sawyer has a softspot for Hurley
  • Ben can summon the smoke monster to do his bidding
  • Apparently the island use to belong to Widmore and Ben took it away from him.  He also plans to take his daughter from him in return for what was done to Alex.
  • The dead body that washes up on shore belongs to the doc and he was killed by someone from the boat

Those were some of the major events from the episode.  I’ll do a full recap, but will be out of town for a few days, so feel free to discuss what you thought about The Shape of Things to Come here until I get back!

What was the writing on the door that ben opened to go get the smoke monster. It was behind the panel the he opened that his blazers were in front of - anyone tivo or record it for a closer look??

2

Does anyone know the name of the actor that plays the marine who shot Alex (Martin Keeley)?

3

So I thought that the smoke monster thing was stupid. I’m over the fact he can summon some stupid smoke monster….Its corny!

Scott also you should list that Sawyer is invisible because you cant seem to shoot and kill the guy and Claire has super human powers…her house f-ing explodes and she is “alittle wobbly” and like 20 minutes later she’s fine!!! Too funny.

The answer to why Sayid is working for Ben was cool but again it is Ben manipulating people…You could see his smile as he walked away from Sayid saying he was going to help him kill people from Whidmores crew “Whose Next”.

Here is a interesting question. When the people from the boat were attacking and Sawyer and Locke are are arguing what to do with Ben, Ben walks into a little hideout. At that moment does he time travel cause the next scene he is somewhere else in a flash forward and after that scene he comes out of the secret hideout. I thought that was key. From his house he can time travel. WHY WHY WHY do they let this man live????????????? I dont get it! Kill him god damnit!!

Also please beat the SH*T out of Daniel Faraday. He has bent the losties over like 5-6 times.

Second interesting question

When Ben goes to Whidmores house and says he’s going to kill Penny at this point is Sayid and Desmond already on the boat and is Sayid there to kill Penny when she presumably rescue them. In that case he is setting up Desmond kind of.
Sayid had no idea Ben was off the island because he says upon meeting him in Iraq how did you get off the island…Ben lies, and for the first time Sayid the master of deception doesn’t pick up on it…..How? Why?
Desmond and Sayid obviously make it off the island in a different manner than the people on the island I think.

Thought the episode was cool but it raised more questions

relationship of Ben and Whidmore. What is the game they are playing. What are the rules?

Ben travels to October 24 2005 in Tunisia and uses the name Moreiarity (spelled wrong) significance?

I think this show is never until the last episode of the last season reveal any real answers. More questions are thrown out there every time. It bothers me but I guess I should just deal with the fact and enjoy the show.

Sorry this is so long but also

Any significance to the risk game played by sawyer and hurley and hurley saying Australia is the key to the game?

We still don’t know about the 3-toed statue and who it represents. But it seems to me like Ben manipulates people and has a real talent for it and it seems like Whidmore is the same sort as Ben so I wonder if the 3-toed statue represents a character manipulating Ben and Whidmore. Maybe the whole show is about manipulation like making mice run and learn the maze. It might be a big scientific experiment by aliens, 3-toed aliens.
In this episode Ben called himself Moriarty and that name happens to also be a character, a villain in Sherlock Holmes stories. Ben certainly is a villain; I don’t see how he could turn out to be “one of the good guys”. If Ben can control the smoke monster, why wasn’t his first reaction to use the smoke monster before his ‘daughter’ was killed. And is she really dead? I keep wondering if some the ‘dead’ people are going to return like Patchy did. John certainly made a miraculous recovery from the gunshot wound in the back that Ben gave him just before leaving him in that disgusting hole of rotting humans, other victims of Ben.
I agree with Adam that Sawyer must be invincible because the shooters were taking out all the unarmed people and it sure looks like that Sawyer would have been easy to pick off and since he was armed, if you were the shooter, wouldn’t that be the most likely guy to shoot at first? It must be true that Australia is significant in the game that Whidmore and Ben are playing, but how and why?

krys10:

it’s Kevin Durand

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0243806/

6

I think that Ben isn’t time travelling, it’s just a flashforward showing what happens after.

7

yeah gianni is right its a flash forward

8

Why would he need to confirm the date, including what year it was? Why would he have on a big Eskimo looking jacket as well and wake up in the middle of the desert?

9

God I thought that was an awesome episode. I probably liked it better then season 3’s finale!

I noticed how Sawyer is starting to protect innocents a lot more, how Siyed is become more of a cold blooded killer, and how Ben is now a bit more of a hero then a villain. I’m interested to see where this jacob thing goes though, I hated the whole Jacob thing in season 3 but for some reason it now grabs my attention.

10

im getting confused are we still on season 3 or ave we jumpd to season 4 because season 4 aint ment to be out till next year!?!?

11

Season 4 is halfway over in the US.

12

yer i get it now… ive been re watching season 3 on dvd but also been watchin season 4 at the same time and by watchin them both at the same time its got me thinkin its all one season

13

I don’t understand why Sayid and ben are in Tunisia! Why Nadia is buried there? They were from Iraq! Or it is a mix between Ben flashforward (meeting with Sayid) and Ben time travel (Ben in Tunisia)? I’m very confused :P

14

Food for thought. I thought it was funny that the fraighters couldn’t hit Sawyer and picked off extras like it was nothing but then i got to thinking. Maybe the island is protecting certin people like michael who couldn’t commit suicide. I mean Clair’s house gets an rpg and the house comes down in flames around her and all she gets is a bump on the head and sharpshooters can’t hit Sawyer. During the break i watched season 1 and in episode 1-3 Jack sees his dad on the beach in a black suit and white tennis shoes. When Hurley sees Jacob in 4-1 in the cabin the man in the rocking chair is wearing a black suit and white tennis shoes. Check it out. This brings me to Ben. When Widmore asks Ben if he is here to kill him he says “You know i cant’t do that.” I think Ben can some how travel like Desmond but on command, but Charles Widmore is his constant so he can’t kill him. Just thoughts what do you guys think.

15

Eric - that’s a really good theory about Charles being Ben’s constant so that’s why he can’t kill him! I have often thought that Ben can teleport from one place to another like Dessy Boy.

Jean - If it’s true that people can come back to life, I would think that Ben would know about this. So I don’t think he would mourn for her like he did and set off on a mission to avenge her death. And if he used the smoke monster while she was still alive, I think it would have gone ahead and killed her anyway.

I loved this episode. I like the way they portrayed Ben as a human and started to create a reason to sympathise with him. Although I have to agree with almost EVERY person who has posted about this ep how UNBELEIVABLE it is that Claire was just a ‘little wobbly’ after surviving her house being exploded to cinders…. There must be some underlying reason, because that is just insane!

If the theory about Jacob/Jack’s dad is true, then it may mean something that Claire is Christian Shepherd’s daughter as well, which may explain that ridiculous way she survived the explosion.

16

Oh, and if anyone has been a follower of Alan Dale since his “Neighbours” days up to “Ugly Betty”, we all know Ben shouldn’t worry about killing Charles Widmore, because he’s bound to die of a heartattack eventually!

17

anyone know what song Ben was playing on the piano?…or the translation of the two men in the sahara…? Did anyone else notice the “black Rock” painting on the wall in Widmore’s house?

18

Great episode, and I have a few thoughts.

1. What happened to the 15 or so other survivors that came with Locke, Sawyer, Hurley, Ben, et all to the compound? I only recall seeing 3 get shot when Sawyer was running around playing Rambo, and I think that only Clair’s house exploded. I thought it was odd to see Ben, Hurley,Locke, Sawyer, Clair and Miles walking away into the jungle at the end of the episode all alone.

2. Why is Miles suddenly attached to Sawyer? Since he knew the commando’s were from the boat and were coming for Ben, and he was clearly part of that agenda, why didn’t he join them? Was he scared of the smoke monster. Very odd.

3. They need to do a better job when someome gets blown up (or blowed up as my young nephew says), because I agree that Clair recovered too fast. Also, if they knew that Ben was in his house, why bomb her house at all??

4. When Ben pulled out that assault rifle out of the piano stool, shouldn’t that have been a further sign to everyone that he cannot be trusted?? I think they need to kill him, but then we would not have much of a show.

5. Where did Bernard learn morse code? Also, is anyone surprised that Daniel Faraday is not there to rescue the survivors? I cannot understand why Jack still believes this.

That’s all folks!!!

19

I find it weird that Sawyer thinks Locke & Ben are wacko’s when he should think anything is possible after seeing the smoke monster.

20

Smoke monster is the dumbest thing on this show beside all the morons stuck on the island. These people have to beat to death daniel faraday and Ben. I dont know how they let these two people not get whooped. Ben needs to be shot, its getting alittle old that he just gets everyone to do what he wants all the time and they play into it all the time. shoot him please./

21

So did anyone happen to look up the the code that was audibly heard over the telephone. The code 14J has an actual military reference.

14J — Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator

Major duties. The air defense tactical operations center operator supervises or serves as a member of a manual early warning network (MEWN) section, team, or platoon in operations and intelligence functions.

I doubt the reference has much meaning but still interesting none-the-less.

22

I find it strange that if ben can time travel(still not totally proven) that he wouldn’t just go back to the time before alex was killed and save her. For that reason I was thinking that maybe ben’s scene in the dessert wasn’t time travel but more of a teleporation, and that he had to ask the correct date because of the time difference between the island and the outside world. Just something to think about, I actually think it is time travel myself.

I think it was a great pick up of Eric’s that ben can’t kill Widmore because he is his constant.

I agree with the fact the that the gun fight scene was a little weak, but in the same way I was glad that they never spent a lot of time on it, got it done all in about a half an episode, they could have had swayer hide behind that house forever but they didn’t. It wasn’t to bad of a scene but I hope they get back more to the island based stuff like ben’s scene’s.

23

I’m new here, so pardon me if I offer a theory that has already been discussed. However, I’ve been thinking that the Others are the original crew of the Black Rock, because they never seem to age (I’m thinking of that guy that Ben first saw as a child before he turned on the Dharma people). Could Widmore somehow have been part of the original Black Rock crew, and he is trying to get back to the island? Widmore said that Ben couldn’t kill him, so perhaps it is similar to the way that Michael could not kill himself until he returned to the island. Obviously Widmore and Ben have some sort of past history and/or understanding. He isn’t just some wealthy person who is arbitrarily looking for the island.

Regardless, has anyone ever discussed a theory that the Others are the original crew of the Black Rock?

24

Michael. Good point about the others being part of the original crew of the black rock. I don’t think I have seen it discussed before (or at least not on this site). My memory is fading but wasn’t Danielle Rousseu part of the original balck rock crew? I vaguely recall that she came to the island on that ship, everyone died, and then her daughter was taken from her. I could be wrong as I have not seen any of the prior season DVD’s.

Speaking of the others, where are they now? At one point they were so protective of the island that they told the survivors never to cross a certain boundary. Now, they are MIA with a bunch of commando’s walking around looking for their leader.

Can anyone explain this deal with Jacob’s cabin moving and why Hurley can find it? I must have missed that.

25

Scott, that’s a good point about Ben wearing a big coat when he landed in the desert. I thought he came straight from the island, but don’t think he’d be wearing that if he did.

26

Dean Moriarty is the main character in Jack Kerouac’s book ‘On The Road’.

Sayid says something to Ben about him following him to Tikrit, which is in Iraq not Tunisia

27

Is the dessert that ben was in the same as where the polar bear was found.

28

There is a painting in the hall, just outside of Charles Widmore’s bedroom. We see half of it when Ben is to the right of the screen standing just inside the door in the darkness talking to Charles Widmore. The painting is in the light through the open door on the left side of the screen. That painting is one by Paul Cezanne, one of the many he painted of his beloved mountain. The painting is by Paul Cezanne The Peak of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Cezanne was fascinated by the mountain, he felt that the Gods were born and lived there. I think there is a parallel with Charles Widmore and the island… maybe he believes the island to be the place where gods are born and dwell.

29

I believe that Charlotte’s dig was in Madenine, Tunisia. Ben wakes up in the Sahara desert, but he does go to Tozeur, Tunisia.

Nice info Jean - Heres a link to a picture of the painting.

30

Got this info from lostpedida.com and wikipedia.com
“A polar bear skeleton is found in a desert in Medenine, Tunisia by Charlotte Lewis. It was found with a leather collar on bearing the Hydra symbol. (”Confirmed Dead”)” (lostpedia.com)
In the latest episode it states Ben’s location as the Sahara Dessert, when he wakes up in the middle of the dessert with his winter coat on.
“The Sahara covers huge parts of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia. Around forty percent of the Tunisia is composed of the Sahara desert” (wikipedia.com)
I am not good at all with geography so please correct me if I am wrong.
I was thinking that maybe there is more then one Dharma type of location, if no one can find this island, why should it be limited to the only special place like this.

31

When Ben wakes up he seems a little surprised and obviously isn’t dressed for the dessert. The name on his jacket is halliwax, i think this is one of the surnames the doctor in the orientation video uses.

I love the ideas about Widmore being Bens constant and the original others being the Black Rock crew but i’m wondering where are they now? I know we last saw them at the end of season 3 camping out and i assume they are now in the ‘temple’, the place where ben was directing alex. But if there is a war on shouldn’t ben either be trying to get more manpower or would they not want to defend themselves and protect their leader?

32

Danielle came to the island on some sort of research boat not on the black rock! The black rock was owned by alvar hansos grandafther

33

Claire and Sawyer are not going to die anytime soon, they have the same problem Michael has. Is there any possibility that people on the island have a duel existence off the island(Doctor on the boat?) I would definitely like to know more about Richard (2nd in command of Others) he has to be sme sort of immortal. I think Jacobs house is like some house of the dead or osmething and the black smoke represents all of the spirits of bodies on the islands.

34

I think the idea Charles is Bens constant is spot on! well done Eric, I also agree with the Ben/Desmond theory, I dont think Ben controls it though, also Ben says you wont find the Island to Charles, then he wakes up with a Big Coat on in the desert, maybe the island has moved to a colder place?

35

I think that Claire calling out Charlie when she is found after the RPG hits her house is very important, I think he is some how protecting her now like how he is appearing to Hurley after the island.
Also when Ben appears in the dessert he has a jacket on with a logo that hasn’t been seen before, it is also the first time that the I cing lines around the outside have been different. Here is a link to the picture: http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Image:Bensparkalogo_Final3.jpg
I also found a rough translation for what the people that ride up on ben in the dessert (Bedouin’s) are saying.
One of the Bedouin points out how Ben does not have a trail. The other replies, “Where did this [guy] come from? Down from the sky?” Ben asks them if they speak English, and when he gets no reply, he asks them if they speak Arabic, and then Turkish, but they still do not speak with him.

36

Hanso were doing experiments, making use of islands potental, possibility that linderman aquired control of island from Hanso. Ben took from linderman with help of original others. When oceanic crashed he was stuck in a book club??? what was Ben doing with the island, if experiments, then they seemed to be poorly financed and v low staff. What is Jacob, why is he trapped in cabin, why was he guiding Ben, to what purpose.

Kate does not do it for me any more :-(
In early epesodes it was the layers to each personality that was interesting, all seem transparent at this stage except Ben.

37

They most certainly should not have killed Alex off, especiallly right after killing Karl and Danielle. I’m not just saying this because she’s one of my favorites, but she was different from all of the other characters. She was the only one who actually felt like she was home without having to worry about the stuff she was eventually wrapped up in. She was…normal.
