The Shape of Things to Come Recap | Lost Episode 4.09

This episode offered action, surprises, answers, and of course more questions.  So far, this is one of my favorite episodes this season.  Ben has gone from bad guy leader of the Others, to one of my favorite characters on the show.  Lots of things happened on the island with both groups, as well as off the island, so here we go:

Jacks got a stomach ache.  He and Kate have a terrible conversation about crackers.

Jack and Kate

Doc Ray washes up on shore.  Notice that the scar on his face is now fresh and has stitches.  on the boat it looks as though that scar is pretty old.  Is he both dead on the island yet still alive on the boat?  The whole time difference thing with the island is getting right confusing.

More games being played.  This time the game is Risk and “Australia is the key to the whole game”.  Speaking of risk, Ben’s going to take a big risk in a few minutes.

sawyer locke and hurley playing risk

Alex enters 1622 to turn the fence off.  The code also sends a message of “14J” to Ben’s house by telephone.  The code lets them know that “They’re Here!”.

Flashforward - Ben wakes up in the middle of the Sahara desert with a parka on and his breath is still cold as you can see it coming off of him. He then throws up some orange liquidy grossness. (I think that this is important after watching the previews for next week’s episode where Jack also throws up).
Ben in the Sarah Desert

Ben has a cut on his jacket down to his arm and he seems quite frightened upon arriving in the desert.  This cues me to think that Ben was in some type of struggle that he was trying to get away from. Possibly polar bears, or maybe a struggle with some scientists in an arctic station (end of season 2 anyone?)

ben in the parka

Ben can apparently speak multiple languages and is a deadly with his club.  “Oh..so you do speak English?”.

oh so you do speak english?

Back to the island - Sawyer goes to save Claire.  The freighter people are pretty good shots when killing the extra’s but terrible when aiming for Sawyer.  This is either your typical bad action sequence where the bad guys never hit the hero, or maybe something more.  Sawyer not being hit could be along the same lines as Michael not being able to kill himself until some “job” has been completed.

sawyer cant be shot

RPGs have no major affects on Claire since she gets up and is “just a little wobbly.”  Claire is certainly in some type of danger, as Aaron comes to be in Kate’s hands in the future.  I think the writers are just toying with us and the fact that rumors are running wild that she will die.  Claire also makes a comment - “I’m OK, I’ll live”.  Miles pipes in and says  I wouldn’t be too sure about that”.  Interesting bit of foreshadowing…

claires house is blown up

Back to Ben who is now in Tozeur, Tunisia.  He checks in under the name “Dean Moriarty”, and says he “hasn’t been there in a while”.  Strange how his name from his last check in was only a page or too deep in the register.  I think Ben has not been there in some time when looking at the island time, but off the island he was there just days before.  It’s also odd that Ben has to confirm not only the days date, but also even the year.

The name Dean Moriarty is a character in a book called On the Road which is based on the spontaneous road trips of a man and his friends.  I think that goes right along with the quick changes in location the Ben has obviously just gone through.
Sayid is shown on the news on TV and is being hounded by the press as he is trying to burry his dead wife?  It seems that since the time Sayid got off the island he has somehow found Nadia, married her, and shes been murdered by Widmore’s people.  I could be wrong, but that also looks like a picture of Locke and Kate in the paper the lady is holding.

sayid on tv burrying nadia

Ben tracks him down and so the relationship between Ben and Sayid the hit man begins.

Back to the island - The freighter people are at Ben’s house and they have Alex on her knees with a gun to her head.  Ben, the man the man who seems to know everything and every outcome is outplayed for the first time. Ben takes a risk (great tie in to the game of risk being played earlier) and Keamy shoots Alex in the head.  For the first time ever on the show, Ben looks completely in shock and out of control of a situation.

Killing Alex was against the rules.  “He changed the rules”, and Ben was about to fight back.  He goes into his secret room and through a hidden door covered in ancient hieroglyphics (ancient similar to the ancient 4-toed statue) to summon the smoke monster.

Back to the beach - Farraday (who is really getting on everyone’s nerves) fixes the phone to send morse code.  He recieves a message back from the boat saying everything fine and the helicopter is coming in the morning.  Bernard apparently knows morse code and tells everyone he’s lying.  The message said the doctor and the losties on the boat are fine.  Farraday finally admits that they were never here to take them off the island.

Back to Ben - Sawyers had enough of “these wackos” and takes Claire, Aaron and Miles back to the beach.  He tells Hurley to come but Sawyer and Ben says No.  Sawyer seems to be growing a bit of a soft side for helping people lately and says if they hurt Hurley that he would kill them.

Flashforward - Ben is now in London, England to see Mr and Ms Kendrick in 4E.  Upon entering the room, we see someone I didnt expect to see meeting Ben, at least not this season - Charles Widmore.

Ben makes an interesting comment saying “You’re rock is lovely this time of year”.  This is followed by Widmore saying that the island was his and will be his again.  This to me confirms that Widmore has been to the island previously.  I also like this shot of Ben.  It’s like he’s coming out of the dark and into the light.  Similar to his character shifting from the bad guy Other, to teaming up with the Losties and keeping the bad guy Widmore away from the island.

When Widmore asks Ben if he’s come here to kill him, Ben says “you know I can’t do that”.  There have been some interesting speculations that this is because Widmore is Ben’s constant.   Ben tells him that he has come to tell him he is going to kill his daughter, Penelope, so that he will understand how he feels, and that he wished he had never changed the rules.

I mentioned in a previous post that Lost could be explained with the game of Mousetrap and that it was being played by Widmore and Ben.  This scene is even more proof that there is some kind of game going on between the two, and everyone else is just part of setting up the trap.

Nice Recap and I totally agree.
Ben has become my #1 favorite character.

2

From previous epsiodes we learnt that if you have been on the island you can’t get killed i.e Michaels numerous sucide attempts this could mean this is the Reason Ben can’t kill Widmore. Also when Ben meets sayid and Widmore he bears no scars that have been on his face since series 3 . Also when Ben said all his people would die as a sacfifice for the Island so where are all his people currently ? For me this was the best episode in term of info offered for a long while. I can’t help but think with our Jack Kate and Sayid three major leaders how the rest of the people on the island survive once the Oceanic 6 leave

3

Considering the widmore gang seem quite happy to do the murdering spree they might not be alive. Although if they are not alive it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Jack to need to go back. Could the remaining gang have the sickness and not be allowed to leave?

Wrote another entry about this episode right after it aired under another heading so I wont go as detailed but the episode bothered me. Besides Claire and Sawyer be invincible and the smoke monster being the dumbest thing ever, why do people still listen to Ben. He should still be locked up. They are all idiots!!!! How come the smoke thing didnt kill any of the soilders they are all still alive this week.

When Sayid meets Ben in the streets he says “how did you get off the island”? This leads me to believe some of the people get off in a different way than than some of the other people. Could be wrong.

I think that when Ben went into that room he also teleported of time traveled to Sayid. When he woke up in the Sahara I think was a flash forward to when he leaves the Island at some point this season because there is a huge final battle with the freighter and typical Ben sneaks off and finds his way out of danger. Thats why his arm was f-ed up. The english girl with the digging up of the polar bear from earlier episode is odd because she is in the desert and ben wakes up there with a huge coat on.

Lots of black rock references in this episode I think some answers on that would be nice, although we prob wont get them. Thought the episode as a whole only answered why Sayid is working for Ben…not all that interesting really.
I think Sayid because of time travel or whatever could be on the boat to kill penelope when she arrives to save desmond. Maybe Ben found a way to make that happen.

Not enough answers for me but more are promised in the next few weeks. Love the idea of Whidmore as Bens constant that is pretty cool. Can Daniel Faraday not be so much of a weasel?? Someone needs to kick that fool in the face.

5

Might be that Sayid is already working for Ben being on the freighter.

Would suck for Desmond though.

We really need more answers.

6

Have just found this website and i’m proper blown away, its mega. What an excellent re-cap of episode 9, it was definitely worth the wait. Loving the theories re sayid being on the freighter and perhaps already working for Ben, i thought i’d had some pretty good theories till i read all this - my head is mush now !!!!

7

nice recap.

i was going to post this earlier but haven’t had time:

anyone know how tom had time to go to nyc to visit michael?
i rewatched season 3 a few weeks ago during the break and tom was in every episode until his death. could this relate to the time traveling seen by ben in this episode? if the sub was the only way off the island how else could he get off the island to visit michael? (after the sub was blown up)

8

Just a quick question - if Ben controls the smoke monster then why did he have it kill Mr Eko in season 3?! I cant think of any reasons why.

9

It’s not “your rock” it’s “Irak is beautiful this time of the year”, Scott (Ben, I think, was just in Irak). Also you went for “burry” up there when it’s supposed to be “bury”.

Sorry. But I just had to be a smart ass :) And it’s my first post :/

10

Thanks for the grammar lesson. Here’s one for you - it’s spelled Iraq not Irak.

Welcome to the site :)

11

always liked ben, even as a the bad guy. loved the theory that widmore is ben´s constant. perfect.
But is anyone wondering which were the rules before widmore changed them and how came they agreed upon rules?
he says that the island was his and it will be again. We know that widmore had business with alvar hanso, right? And he probably began claiming his rights after ben killed all the dharma people…
ben is not exactly the bad guy, he´s obcessed with protecting the island, he identiffy the hostiles as his people and probably think they have more right to be there because they got there before (i´m really found of the theory that they came on the black rock…)

12

Nice Recap,
Ben turns to be a jumber now which is fine but to be an American in Iraq walking, drinking tea that is a huge glitch.

Thank you man i really enjoy it

13

Basil,

don’t you think Ben was refering to the island as “the rock” and not Iraq? Ben might have just been to Iraq, as we know from the episode, but Widmore can’t be aware of that as he thinks Ben left the Island = the rock! Make sense… ?

14

The rock is common slang for an island.

15

could he be talking about the black rock, the boat?

16

When Widmore asks Ben if he’s come here to kill him, Ben says “you know I can’t do that”.
I think it is because Widmore also have bin on island and island don’t let he die another palce not island.
p.s. I hope you understod my point…
sorry for my bad english

17

I think Penny is actually going to come to the rescue and save the Oceanic 6.

18

Did Whidmore fund and run Darma and then Ben took over when he killed everyone?

19

I think the Dharma intiative was desolved after the purge as all of dharma were killed. Dharma was funded by the Hanso foundation which do business with the Widmore corporation.

20

What happend to the other people tha were with locke? They just died?

21

jason, i think the theory of penny rescuing the oceanic six is so cool, but what would happen to Desmond. Will he die? On another note, this episode was ok. the action was nice after michael’s episode being boring, yet i thought it was silly that Sawyer survives a hail of bullets and claire survives her house being blown up while in it. Other than that, the episode was wierd in a good way. The Monster is Back!!!! YES!!!! Does Ben control the monster? If so, why kill the Pilot and Eko. Maybe the Pilot to make sure that he doesn’t fix the black box., but why Eko.

22

oh my gosh, WHAT an episode! I have not yet read the recap nor everyone’s comments because i just need to let out my thoughts!
So many things (and strange things!) happened in this episode! i was nothing but shocked to see Alex being murdered! Also, I think its now proven that Ben is the master of the monster, he controls it! or that’s at least the impresion i got.
And what with the flashforward ??! I think i now understand why sayid is working with Ben! he kinda led him to it, implicitely… poor sayid…
and the most interesting part, would be the final scene: Widmore and Ben know each other, actually they were working or some sort of thing together, since Widmore changed the rules… curious.

Anyway, this episode was a GOOD one and Im very much looking forward for the nexts!

23

i think u made a mistake in this recap…..
ben says that “IRAQ is lovely this time of year”
not “you rock is lovely this time of year”
and what kind of game r they playing? widmore and linus>?
