The Other Woman | Quickest Recap Ever

jacksonhole.jpgI’m back from vacation and I’m still in one piece. You can see from the picture that it was FREEZING there, but I’m back and wanted to do a quick recap of this week’s episode of Lost called The Other Woman. Also, thanks again to Crash Club for filling in for me last week, and for all the great comments everyone left. You all rock.

One of the comments that was left on the previous post went something like this:

Adding more fuel to the fire that Penny’s Father, Charles Widmore, know’s something about the island. On Henry Gale’s ballon (Ben Claimed to be Henry upon being captured the first time by the crash survivors, but when they went to check out the ballon they found the dead body with identification of the real Henry buried) it says “Widmore Labs”
Also the Pregnancy tests used on the island by Sun & Kate were made by “Widmore Labs”

These comments couldn’t have come at a better time because we found out in this week’s episode that Charles Widmore is the owner of the freighter and he is desperately trying to find the island (Anyone know which of the Others he pimp slapped in the back alley in the blindfold?). What I find interesting is that Widmore Labs was written on the pregnancy test. I’m pretty sure that Kate got the test from one of the parachute drop offs that we saw once a long time ago in a galaxy far far away when the food and other supplies were dropped on the island. This suggests to me that Widmore knows where the island is at least in some capacity.

We also saw that Ben is not only the master of mind games, he is quite possessive of Juliet saying “You are MINE”. She was having an affair with Goodwin (The dude Anna Lucia killed back in season 1 or 2 I cant remember which) while his wife, Harper, watched from the Jungle. Ben got jealous and wanted to ride the train too. He didn’t want to just ride though, he wanted her all to himself so he came up with the plan to send Goodwin to find out info on the Lostie plane crash assuming that he would eventually be killed, and Juliet would then be all his. The reason behind Ben’s obsession is that Juliet looks just like his childhood friend on the island (Harper makes a comment referring to this). I find this an interesting thing to point out. I think his friend will come back in to the picture at some point. If she hasn’t already. Many people think that Charlotte is this girl. I don’t buy that one though. Time will tell.

Another thing I noticed is that Charlotte is a dirty fighter. She only likes hitting people from behind so they don’t know its coming. She pistol whips Kate in the back of the head, and tries to attack Juilet from behind with a big metal object while she is trying to stop Daniel from playing solitaire on the computer.. or making the gas stable..whatever. Turns out Charlotte and Daniel’s mission on the island is to wage war against Ben, and the first part of their plan is to give Ben some Pepto Bismol and rid him of his gas. We’ve seen Ben use the gas before on his dad and the others when he did the mass killing, and they think he will try to do it again on everyone living on the island in order to protect it from outsiders.

The episode ended with Ben waltzing out of Locke’s control and back to his house. Ben made a deal with Locke about letting him enjoy some freedoms, if he told him about Widmore. When i saw Ben walking back to his house I couldn’t help but think he was back in control and he had a new group of “others” to control. Those being Locke, Sawyer, Hurley and all the others that joined Locke’s camp. Since his previous followers have all but deserted him, I think he will start playing enough mind games with the Locke Losties that he will eventually over take Locke’s position of power just like he did when Locke had him captured in the Swan hatch.

Thats all I have for this week. Help me out in the comments, because I know I left a lot undiscussed about this weeks episode. I have some sneak peaks coming up for next week’s episode which looks like it will be another great one. Also, if you missed my comment in the previous post, I think this site is pretty ugly and is in need of a face lift. We will be putting up a newly designed site at some point this weekend that will give you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Hopefully you’ll dig it.

Thanks Scott for the recap! I watched the episode last night and i liked it half/half. It was an important episode since now we know that is Penny’s father the one that’s behind abaddon, naomi and the “rescuers” from the freighter. And that is interesting bcos PEnny is from one side looking for Desmond and Widmore already knows about the island but is not sharing info with Penny (this we know when she says Charlie that she doesnt know what boat he’s talking about nor who’s Naomi). On the other hand, she does know about the island.

I thought it was interesting to learn a bit more about the story behind Juliette’s love life in the island and see that she too has suffered… but i didnt like how the episode ended with juliette and jack kissing, what the hey?! and i found it a bit lame that Goodwin’s wife appears to Juliette in the jungle too. If she had been dead and she’d appear to juliette that would have been ok but she was certainly visible to jack too.

I think the Other that was in the video tape blindfolded looked like Richard (the one that recruited Juliette)!

I think that Ben is obsess by Juliet because she looks like his mother…remember…long blond hair and blue eyes but it could also be his childhood friend..not sure. By the way, where is his mother??? We didn’t see her since Ben killed all the others.

3

Valerie - Ben’s mother died while giving birth.

I liked this episode, i think it kept a gud pacing for the season, especially after so much from the last episode, at least it wasnt one of those episodes that told us nothing…
Im now really confused as to what Bens plan is. The whole Faraday and charlotte making the gas inert thing makes it hard to think that Widmore is trying to exploit the island, surely he cud just hire ppl to kill everyone on the island, maybe thats the eventual plan, who knows….
Whats up with Jacks luv life??? does he luv Kate or Juliette, he just seems to be bouncin between the two. (kinda like kate actually).

I dont think the blindfolded guy was richard… i checked it out agen, and the face and hair was totally different.

5

Wow good job with the new website’s design! Looks much much better :o)

6

How did Widmore find out about the island in the first place? Any ideas?

Also, do you think he sent Desmond on that boat race on purpose so he would crash on the island?

7

one thing that really bothered me and someone pointed it out was harper (psych doc) just appears out of nowhere and then leaves the same way….i thought that was super lame. BUT I was thinking if time travel or teleportation is what is going on then maybe when she says she talked to ben when speaking to juliette she meant the ben that is off the island or from the past or future….who knows.

also what is up with jack either juliette or kate bro….personnally im a kate fan but julz has great buzoms.

and whats with the gas?? i get that ben used it before but i thought that was kind of a weak storyline…..how do they know so much about the island (charlotte and daniel)??? I was thinking because they have been there before…how else would they know where everything is??

like the page….i feel warm and fuzzy

I didn´t like the episode. everybody kind of knew that mr. windmore were somehow involved. And the gas I though it was a bit of a strech.
but I think Adam pointed out an important matter. How did Ben send his orders to Harper? From the past or the future? Or does he actually have means to communicate with his people even when he´s held prisioner?

ps: once again, pardon my spelling. I´m brazilian.

9

I agree with Joana. How on earth did Ben know that Charlotte and Faraday were heading for the Tempest Station to deal with the gas? He had no conventional means of knowing that or of telling Juliette. So the time travel or thought projection thing seems likely…..remember there was the mysterious noise just before and after Harper appeared - could the noise be the side-effect of that kind of paranormal activity? Still doesn’t answer the question of how Ben actually got access to the means of doing it, unless he is actually psychically gifted.
Regards
Andy
ps Thank God for this site.

I can understand how Ben would know how Charlotte and Faraday were going to head for the gas. He had a spy on the boat so he would probably get all of there plans through this means. I don’t know how he was able to make contact with Harper, maybe they are able to control the time travel to allow them to appear where they want (personally I really hope this is not it, but it is a suggestion)
My big question is, if Widmore is the one after the island and behind Matthew Abanddon why wouldn’t Charlotte and Faraday release the gas and kill everyone on the island. When Abanddon was giving Naomi her orders he said that there are no survivors of flight 815 (to me implying if they find anyone, kill them). Something isn’t linning up for me.

Could it be that there is cloaking technology available on the island? After all, when we see the ‘monster’ all we see is exhaust fumes, and no machine to make it. If so perhaps the whispers are people cloaked, and Harper simply turned her’s off, and then back on? Long shot of a tangent I know, but just thinking allowed.

12

I agree with Jones. I got the impression that when Naomi and the rest were sent to the island, that they were to kill anyone that was in their way. Maybe the plans changed because they need the people on the island to get to Ben, but yeah, it would seem a lot easier if I were Charlotte and Daniel to gas the whole place because it would be a lot easier than Charlotte constantly knocking everyone out from behind!

13

There is a lot that doesn’t add up for me too. Whose side are Faraday and Charlotte on? Daniel seems like he can flip flop but Charlotte has shown a ruthless side. I hated the smoke monster thing from the start it was a horrible storyline in my opinion. Its hard for me to suspend my disbelief on that one.
So I hope that never comes back.

If there is cloaking technology that will be very weak. At this point they should run with time travel/teleporting/ space time continum. How else would Harper appear and have had talked to Ben??

14

“Ben is exactly where he wants to be”. Ben is the master of misleading, just because he appears to be locked up in a room alone doesn’t mean he is. Remember he did live there for a long time and would know the workings and secerets of the building better than the new inhabitants. Ben could quite possibly have constant contact with the others and knows exactly whats going on in the outside.
Ben is still very much in control and will be in the future as Syiads flash forward shows.

Things I learned from the enhanced episode tonite:

1. The tempest is reference to a shakesphere play called The Tempest. It is a story about people who are shipwrecked on a magical island.

2. The made it a point to note the fact that Goodwin’s full name is Goodwin Stanhope. I’m not sure the significance of this because I couldn’t really find anything when I searched the name. Anyone have any ideas on the importance of his name?

3. The comments during the scene in the jungle between Juliet and Harper Stanhope made me think that Harper is one of the illusions that the smoke monster has taken on similar to what we saw when Eko’s brother appeared to him, as well as Jack’s dad appearing to him on the island. I think Harper is dead, and we will find out how so in the near future.

4. The person that Juliet is told she looks like by Harper is Annie, Ben’s childhood friend. Not his mother.

5. A Dyson Vacuum commercial came on tonite and they said that Farraday invented the first motor or something to that effect. I just found it to be interesting and tried to somehow tie this to the vacuum Miles used in the old lady’s house to do his ghost busting. I couldn’t really come up with anything though.

6. The tempest station was named after a violent storm and because of the dangerous chemicals it holds.

7. Ben thanks Juliet for looking after Zack and Emma. They were the two kids were on flight 815 and taken by the Others.

8. The tempest station logo is a big wave symbolic of a catastrophic event like the biblical Great Flood.

Anyone catch anything else?

Scott - your comment #3 is interesting because Jack saw the vision as well. I think its the first time a vision has been seen by 2 people.

Of course, they didn’t bother to stop and have Jack say “WHERE THE F*CK DID SHE DISAPPEAR TO??”

17

THE STANHOPES WERE A SCHOLARY FAMILY INTERESTED IN SCIENCE.
CHARLES STANHOPE - SCHOLAR OF MATHMETICS, PHILOSOPHY, SCIENCE AND HE EXPERIMENTED WITH ELECTRICITY. A LIBERAL SYMPATHETIC TO THE AIM OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. FAMOUS FOR WRITING OPPOITION PIECES TO EDMUND BURKE (JULIETS LAS NAME AND HER HUSBANDS FULL NAME). I CANT REMEMBER HER HUSBAND BUT THATS WHAT THE SITE SAID.
PHILLIP STANHOPE - POLITICIAL AND PRESIDENT OF THE MEDICO BOTANICAL SOCIETY. THE ORCHID “STANHOPEA” STATION WAS NAMED AFTER HIM. THE ORCHID, KNOWING FOR BEING BEAUTIFULLY SPECTACULAR, BUT SHORT LIVED.
ALSO IF YOU LOOK UP THE KASPAR HAUSER STORY ITS WEIRD BUT SORT OF DISCRIBES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A MYSTERIOUS MAN (KASPAR), WHO NO ONE REALLY KNEW, NOR HIS TRUE ORIGINS. AND A MAN (P. STANHOPE) WHO EVENTUALLY LOST HIS FAITH N SAW A DECIEVER. KIND OF LIKE A COUPLE OF LOST RELATIONSHIPS! GOODWIN/HARPER/BEN & JULIET.

The whole gas thing was bullshit… They could just have been like: “yo guys! We gotta go deactivate some lethal gas thing, we’ll be back in a couple hours,” no need to hide it or hit people on the head… Then again, the episode would have been half as long…

19

Widmore knows about the island through the diary he bought in the auction before he gave Michael his love’s address

I liked this episode. I thought it was cool how the whispers were back and harper just appeared out of nowhere, but she seemed fake and too…i don’t know. Harsh. Also, Thomas, Sayid and Shannon BOTH saw walt so that was not the first time two people have seen a vision. Or was walt a vision????? The gas thing was over played and kinda dumb. The flashbacks were awesome in showing Ben being kind of in kindergarten taking care of Juliet, but he killed Goodwin, unlike a kindergartner would do. Tom is back, again? When WILL HE DIE!!!!!! Also, there was kind of an answer with what was happening with the Tail-section people. Not really, but it was cool to bring Zac and Emma back up. The end scene with Juliet and Jack was sweet. When Ben said hello do Sawyer and Hurley at the end was AWESOME.

The scene with Jin buying a panda was a FLASHBACK NOT A FLASHFORWARD!
