Meet Kevin Johnson | Lost Episode 4.08 Recap
Meet Kevin Johnson seems to not be a fan favorite among many of our readers. However, I still stand by my opinion that it was a necessary episode and it did answer a lot of questions that were being asked – whether it was the way you wanted them or not.
The quick summary of the episode is that Michael and Walt made it safely off the island, but Michael began filling guilty about killing Anna Lucia and Libby. He tells Walt about what he did and Walt doesn’t want to see or talk to him anymore. Michael must then go on the boat and redeem himself by protecting the people he left behind on the island from the people on the freighter. Not only do we get answers to what Michael was doing during the time between leaving the island in the Lost Season 3 finale, we get some current events on the island. Lets take a look at what went down.
On the Boat
Sayid corners Michael and demands answers about why he is on the boat. Michael simply responds, “I’m here to die”. This seems like a strange response to why he’s on the boat. More on that in a few minutes.
Sayid and Desmond then corner Michael again and demand answers on how and why he came to be on the boat. The answers come in the form of a Michael flashback.

Michael’s Flashback
Michael is in his apartment writing a note to someone. It turns out that this is a suicide note to Walt apologizing for the murders he committed on the island. Michael attempts to kill himself by wrecking his car but fails to actually end his life. Instead he’s injured and wakes up in the hospital.

Upon waking up Michael receives quite a shock as the nurse walks in to check on him. His nurse is none other than Libby herself. Or at least he thought it was her. Michael seems to be haunted by what he did on the island and Libby is just his imagination and guilt kicking in.

Michael’s real nurse then comes in and asks his name, but he won’t give it to her. The reason behind this is that Michael is protecting his identity because he was on Oceanic 815. It turns out his name isn’t the only thing he’s hiding. We see Michael going to his mother’s house where Walt is staying. Apparently, Walt does not want to see or talk to Michael anymore and is staying there hidden with his grandmother.
Michael then goes to a pawnshop to trade in the watch Jin gave to him on the island for a gun. As he’s about to shoot himself, a man steps out of the darkness asking for the time. It’s none other than Mr. Friendly himself. I believe at this time the submarine had not yet been blown up by Locke and this is how he was able to get off the island and track Michael down.

He tells Michael that he needs his help and that he wont be able to kill himself because the island wont let him no matter how he tries. He tells Michael he has more work to do and to meet him at his penthouse in Manhattan.
Michael goes home with the gun, puts it to his head and pulls the trigger…BOOM. Just kidding, nothing happens so he checks the bullets, which are fully loaded. He tries again and as he’s about to pull the trigger again he see’s the news about Oceanic 815 being found at the bottom of the ocean and knows he must go see what Mr. Friendly wanted from him.
Turns out that he’s not staying solo in that penthouse of his. Tom made a reference when Kate was taking a shower that she was not his type. Just to make things a little more clear the writers of Lost decided to make it pretty clear that Tom is friendly with the boys and that he is in fact gay. There is another man there in a robe who he kisses as he leaves to give him and Michael some privacy to talk.

When Michael asks about the plane, Tom tells him that Charles Widmore put it down there to keep people away from finding the island. Tom gives Michael proof that Widmore put the plane in the ocean with purchase orders, as well as pictures of the graves that he dug up the dead bodies from in Thailand. I found it interesting that it was Thailand that was used as the place of the dead bodies. If you remember Jack was in Thailand for some time. Not sure if there’s a connection there or not.
Tom tells Michael that he must go on Widmore’s boat and kill all of the people on it in order to keep them from finding the island. Michael is given a passport with the most generic name the others could come up with to keep from drawing any unnecessary attention – Kevin Johnson. While preparing to board the boat, Michael meets Miles. He tells him he knows his name isn’t Kevin. He also simply continues by saying its OK and that the majority of the people on the boat were lying about something.
Michael also receives a “care package” from Tom. It turns out that there is a bomb in the box and he is supposed to detonate it once he is out to sea. Once the bomb is all set up Michael is about to hit the execute button when Libby appears to him again telling him not to do it. After Michael composes himself from seeing dead Libby again, he presses the button, but nothing happens. Nothing except a note pops up saying “Not Yet”. It turns out the bomb was a fake and was a test for Michael to see if he would actually go through with it.

Back in his cell, Michael is bouncing a ball of the wall constantly. This is the noise that Desmond and Sayid heard in their room that they thought was the engine. Minkowski comes in and tells him he has a call from Walt.
Michael takes the call excited to hear from his son. However, its not Walt, its Ben on the line. He tells Michael that the bomb wasn’t real because some people on the boat are unaware of what Charles Widmore is up to. He wanted to show Michael that he had mercy where Widmore will not if he finds the island. Ben informs Michael that his task on the boat is to compile a list of names of all people on the boat and give it to him when he calls again. He then is to destroy the communication equipment and to sabotage the engine so they will never find the island. Now we know what happen to the communication room and why it was destroyed. It’s also confirmed that Michael is the one sabotaging the boat engine.

Back to real time on the boat – Sayid grabs Michael and takes him to the captain and tells him the truth about Michael and says he is a traitor. To me the captain seems very unsurprised at the news but shows no real reaction. This ends the events on the boat. Lets see what happened on the island.

Current Events on the Island
Locke decides that its time for no more secrets. He calls a meeting between his people, Miles and Ben to get everything out in the open. Miles explains to everyone that the reason the people from the freighter are on the island is because they are after Ben. Sawyer is all for turning him over and being done with them, but Locke says no, and Ben informs everyone that he must stay protected because once they have him their orders are to kill everyone else on the island. Hurley is a bit skeptical of this information because Ben still hasn’t told them who his spy is on the boat. Ben then lets them all in on the secret that we have known for a while. Michael is his spy on the boat.

After the meeting Sawyer points out the fact that Locke didn’t reveal all of the secrets he’s been holding from everyone. He asks about the 3 million dollars Miles demands from Ben in exchange for his loyalty. When Locke says that since there are no banks on the island he didn’t think it was worth mentioning. Miles simply laughs and says Ben will find a way to get it. After all, he’s gone from being locked in a cell to eating dinner and now all but being protected by Locke and his people from the freighter people. This to me suggests that Ben indeed can get off the island or at least has contact with someone who can get the money to him on the island.

Back inside, Ben is watching Karl with his arm around his daughter Alex. You’ll remember how possessive Ben is of the ladies in his life and he obviously is not pleased with him touching her. He tells Alex, Karl, and Rousseau that its not safe there anymore and that they should join the rest of the others at the Temple. In the end they agree to go even though Alex doesn’t like the idea of leaving everyone else behind. Ben tells them that the sanctuary is not for everyone its just for them (meaning the others). I think this is a slight hint that Ben is still playing games against our Lost friends and that he is still in complete control of the situation.

Rousseau, Karl, and Alex begin their trip to the temple and Karl asks what if Ben is tricking them again. No sooner does he say this than he gets shot from an unknown shooter in the woods. As Alex and Rousseau are running, Rousseau also is shot. This leaves Alex who screams out not to shoot because she is Ben’s daughter and he sent is the one that sent them.

The episode ends here and we are left wonder who is doing the shooting and why. I’m guessing that it may be Richard (the never aging other), and a hostile group of others who have turned against Ben. I also think it could be the people from the freighter as we know that Lepidus was sent on a flying mission somewhere. I think his mission may have been to fly some additional freighter people onto the island.
Who do you think was shooting and why?

I don’t know who was shooting, but I believe that it is Ben who is behind the shooting. As you pointed out, Scott, Ben is pretty obsessive of his ladies - in particular his daughter. That’s why I think it’s no coincidence that beautiful Alex didn’t get shot and I’m pretty sure she’ll survive and realise in horror that her father is responsible for the death of her loved ones.
Following this train of thought there’s no way of believing that Ben is one of “the good ones” (anyway, a look into his fishy eyes should do not to believe a single word he says). On the other hand, I’ve to admit that the Widmore-Gang is not an inch more likeable, and I believe that Sayid’s move to hand over Michael to the captain might eventually turn out to be his fatal mistake that Ben, as his future employer, mentioned in an earlier episode of season 4.
But maybe this is all wrong again (as many of my previous guesses). Anyway, I liked the last episode better - involving more feelings and more of my favourite characters. I really hope that Claire, Sawyer and Hurley (+ Charly in some more Hurley-visions) will get more attention in future episodes, though I fear that character development and humor are gradually giving way to freaky time-travelling stuff. Still - can’t wait for next week’s episode.
Best regards from Germany
At the moment it kind of hard to get an idea of time scale, particularly with the whole time lapse problem of getting on and off the Island. However, the one date we do get is when Desmond calls Penny (its christmas eve). A couple of days later (in the real world) the Tsunami hit SE Asia, including Thailand. This could be how Widmore managed to get the corpses to fill the fake plane.
To fill an entire plane with fresh bodies you would need either a lot of people all to die at once or a large storage locker to slowly accumulate people. Further more, the people needed for the fake plane would have to have died from drowning.
It’s no coincidence that Alex is the only one not to get shot, Ben was behind the whole thing. It seems he can get in contact with anyone he wants (despite being locked up) so now that Locke has given him a bit more freedom, it doesn’t seem too far fetched that he organised Rousseau and the boyfriend to be killed.
I thought this was a good ep, despite popular opinion. I think because most of it was a flashback was the reason people were put off by it. But as usual, when a couple of questions are answered, they sandwich it with a couple more questions! Like how does the island have the power to prevent people from dying, even though they are off the island?
P.S. Somthing doesn’t make sense to me re the reason people keep going crazy on the freighter. How long have they actually been there? Because the captain just blames it all on having cabin fever (although we know that’s not true), but to me it doesn’t look like they’ve been there that long. When Michael went to go and see his mum, there were Christmas decorations up, and when Sayid saw the calendar on the boat, he realised it was close to Christmas. So when Sayid and Desmond landed on the boat, they couldn’t have been there that long.
And if this is true…. then where the heck was Ben when he made that call to Michael pretending to be Walt? Because if what Scott says is true, and Michael bouncing the ball was what Sayid and Desmond heard, then at that time Ben would have been incarcerated by Locke. How did he get to a phone?!
I don’t think that the sound that Sayid heard was Micheal bouncing the ball(at least not in this scene). If you remember Ben knew all the people on the boat when they were walking through the island to find Jacob’s shaq(just before he shot one of the boat people). As I rememeber this was before Sayid and Des left for the boat so they couldn’t have heard Michael.
That is the way I rememeber it anyway.
Great episode though, but is it like another month before the next new episode?
It’s a toss up on whether or not I care if Ben’s daughter lives. As far as I’m concerned, they can start killing everyone as long as they begin answering all these storylines!
Is there any conformation on when episode 9 air’s ? Also do we know how long the break is until we get the second half of season 4
May have answered my own question so does this mean we have a super short season 4 !!! Withdrawal symptons have well and truley kicked in

Episode 9 airs on April 24th, 2008 at 10pm. So only a month long break.
@Walter: not sure if you already know when the next episode airs, I believe it’s April 24th.
So it’s a months wait. Not that long, but still - I wanna know what will happen next and I guess a LOT of other people as well :p
I think Dan made a very good point - the fatal mistake by Sayid telling on Michael. Perhaps that indeed is why Sayid starts working for Ben, so will Michael get killed?
Shame I can’t edit my post, Scott beat me to posting, I was a couple of days off, but close enough.
You were right its the 24th
Also, about Sayid telling on Michael. Did you notice the captains reaction? There was no surprise in his face at all. It was as if he knew already who Michael was. Miles new his name wasn’t really Kevin Johnson. I read about another idea that the captain and Widmore knew Michael was on the island and were hoping to some how use him to find it.
Isn’t Michael’s mother (Walt’s grandma) the house where Miles went to remove the spirit that was in the bedroom? If thats the case then who’s spirit was it and why was the money there?
April 29th?! And I thought another week waiting would be painful enough.
Sayid can’t have heard michael bouncing the ball as michael spoke to minkowski, yet by the time sayid heard that noise minkowski had died.
Ben definitely organised karl’s shooting why else would our attention have been drawn to ben watching him touch her.
oh and the noise they heard was regina clunking her chains around before she went overboard
I still say it was Michael bouncing the ball. I agree it wasnt what Sayid heard during the Michael flashback but bouncing a ball isnt really a one time event. It may just be something he does to pass the time.
I doubt it was Regina clunking around. It had a set rhythm to it.
When Ben made the call pretending to be Walt, I think it was from the secret space in his house on the island. You remember, the one behind the bookcase - where he kept all his money and passports etc.
I may be wrong, but that’s what I gathered from the clip.
Also, I don’t think we are any clearer on who the good guys are. Still cannot trust Ben as far as you can throw him.

Ben could not have made the call to michael while in captivity because his face was not beat up in that scene.
“Isn’t Michael’s mother (Walt’s grandma) the house where Miles went to remove the spirit that was in the bedroom? If thats the case then who’s spirit was it and why was the money there?”
I thought the same, that it was in her house. I have no idea whose spirit it was then though.. Does anyone know?
Melissa:
I don’t think it was the same place because Michael’s mother was played by Starletta DuPois while the other grandmother(Mrs. Gardner) was played by Azure McCall.
Ah ok, I thought they looked like each other, didn’t review it though, so thanks, answers a question.
Eric:
I agree about Ben not being held captive when he called Michael. I think this flashback goes back beyond him being locked up in the basement. Theres no telling how long Michael has been on the boat and how long ago Ben contacted him.
Just wanted to point out re when Ben could have called Michael.. isn’t there a time difference operating between the island and the rest of the world (inc the freighter?)
“Meet Kevin Johnson seems to not be a fan favorite among many of our readers.”
Not surprising. The episode is Michael-centric, and the fans hate him. They hate him more for betraying the group than for killing two women. They also hate him for being a parent and being more loyal to his son than the other castaways. Which goes to show how incredibly hypocritical people can be.
I was expecting a much better episode, since Hurley said in an interview that because they thought this would be the season’s finale, this ep. would be a huuuuuge deal ! But i was frankly disappointed…
We all now know that Michael was the spy and that he was working for Ben. We also knew that Widmore is behind the oceanic 815 setup plane in the sea and that he’s looking for Ben… so there was nothing so amazing in this episode.
I think Dan, that it is possible that bcos Sayid gave Michael away, that it is the reason he will be working for him in the future…
Kat questioned how Ben was able to make the call to Michael. Remember the duplicate mirror image rabbits? Maybe there are duplicate Ben’s with divergent personalities.
If the aim of the people on the freighter is to capture Ben and execute everyone else on the island why didn’t they just kill Sayid and Desmond as soon as they reached the ship? What is the purpose of keeping them alive? Did they no they had a spy but where relying on them to give Micheal up? Or are they not at the island to kill everyone as Ben would have them all believe?
This episode was too boring and one-story-telling (most of the episode shows just one flash forward and doesn’t return back to the island or boad until the end of the episode), however I am still very curious about what will happen in the next episode and I can’t wait!
COMMENT FROM KAT MARCH 22ND: “When Michael went to go and see his mum, there were Christmas decorations up, and when Sayid saw the calendar on the boat, he realised it was close to Christmas. So when Sayid and Desmond landed on the boat, they couldn’t have been there that long.”
I reckon theres a time lapse…on the island it may seem that they have been away from home 40 days but its probably only like 20 days and maybe thats the reason why that guy richard hasnt aged…
And why no one needs to get their hair cut
Actually if u think about in season 1+2 Claire doesnt have a fringe but in season3 she clearly has bangs
Leah, yeah I get you about the time lapse thing. So it could be possible that Michael and the rest have been there for longer than I think. That would make the whole ‘cabin fever’ thing make sense, because I wondered why people were goingnuts after only being there for a couple of weeks!
This episode was one of those “evil necessities”, just like the other 48 days and expose (even though that was not neccesary). Lost has few of them. Yet, Meet Kevin was not so bad. It gave so many answers so i give it credit for that. Was I the only one that was cracking up when Karl was shot, and then Rossoueo (however u spell it). Even though Frenchie was awesome, now she is confirmed dead. Meet Kevin, showed also that Michael was only feeling guilty about Libby’s death, not Ana Lucia (or Michelle Rodriguze did not want to fly to Hawaii to shot another episode.) The flash back was kind of depressing and did anyone notice that was not malcolm kelley at all in the window, maybe because he is sixteen. Anyway, told us how Michael got to be on the freighter. An OK episode.
