Lost Summarized by the Game of MouseTrap

I read this and thought it was a pretty interesting point, and since we are on a month long break with no episodes of Lost I figured I’d share it.

In one of Locke’s flashbacks early on in either season 1 or 2 we saw John working in a toy store. He was talking to a child and explaining the rules of the board game Mousetrap. This game was also seen in Ben’s room in one of the more recent episodes. Explaining the game to the boy, Locke says:

Well you start with all these parts off the board. And then, one by one, you build the trap – shoe, bucket, tub – piece by piece it all comes together. And then you wait until your opponent lands here on the old cheese wheel. And then if you set it up just right, you spring the trap.

locke mousetrap game

To me this is the perfect analogy of whats going on at the island. It’s Ben vs. Widmore and Ben is setting up the different pieces of the trap that he needs. He’s completely manipulating Locke, he’s got Sayid working for him in the flash forwards, he’s got Michael spying for him on the boat. It’s only a matter of time before the trap is sprung and someone’s going to lose the game.

could the kid he spoke to be ben?

Scott…

Do you think it is possible that Widmore may have manipulated Desmond to end up on the island? For one to get rid of him or two to set him up as a possible pawn later on?

I started watching season one again. Two things I wanted to point out…

1) On the very first episode when the strange noises and trees shift around…in the back you can hear a conversation between Rose and some of the other strandies… But her comment stands out the most. She says about the sound that she had heard it before and that it was something very familiar…She stated she thought she had heard it back home… Then someone asks her where she is from and she says “Brooklyn”.

2) Also….do you remember that strange bird that swooped down and said…”HHhhhuuuurleyyyy”?

Mousetrap: On the Micro level….In season 3 when Sawyer killed Locke’s father I reflected back on the Mousetrap game scene and equated it to Locke being presented with his father trapped in a room on the island. And, everything lining up for him to get rid of his father.

On the Macro….As far as concerning Locke he is continuely caught in some sort of “Trapped” situation (there’s a whole list of examples) however he manages to get out of these situations.

On the other Macro…I agree that your theory somehow relates to Ben’s overall plan against Widmore. As I say in other posts…Don’t leave Mr. Paik out of this equation.

Jason:
In the voice-over commentary for “The 23rd Psalm” on the Season 2 DVD, producer Bryan Burk confirms that one of the Monster’s sound effects is the receipt printer from a NYC taxi cab. This was reaffirmed in the May 21, 2007 Official Lost Podcast, but it was clarified that the mythology of the Monster is unrelated to the cabs; it is just a matter of sound effects. So this doesn’t rule out Rose actually knowing anything further but it does give a possible reason for her to claim that it is familiar.
I do love the mouse trap theory, I think that Ben is setting Widmore up to take him down, we are just going to have to wait for all the parts to come together.
One more question, has anyone confirmed if it was Ben or Widmore that set up the fake plane on the ocean floor. I know that Tom had some convining evidence but in that case how would he get the black box from the plane that crashed on the island (i.e. I still think that Ben did it).

Jones:

I am wondering how Tom got all that convincing evidence against Widmore.. Either all those documents are fake or Ben has an insider in Widmore’s firm

Duke:
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. For instance, I would assume that whoever took the bodies would cover the graves back over after taking the bodies, this would fall in the same line of thinking as putting the plane on the bottom of the ocean in order to stop people looking for it. With that in mind it would of had to be someone there just as the bodies were taken.
i.e. Widmore leaves graves uncovered (which makes people look for bodies) to put in plane on bottom of ocean (to stop anyone looking for the plane). Doesn’t make sense to me.
Really there are a lot more possible reasons but this is the one I like best so far.

i do think that widmore somehow manipulated desmond for him to end on the island because a) he doesnt want him any near penny and he knows that there’s a chance he will go get her back (since at some point we saw him refuse money from Widmore) b) he doesnt want him around at all and c) he could lead him to the island, by finding the way to contacting penny.

ah by the way, the game theory is ok, its true that it is an allusion to the island, obviously ! good thinkin Scott ;)

The scene with Jin buying a panda was a FLASHBACK NOT A FLASHFORWARD!
