A quick recap of the events of lost season 4 episode 2 “Confirmed Dead”.
The episode opens up with people on a dive at the bottom of the ocean and they come across an airplane and claim it to be Oceanic Flight 815. We then back up and see that what we are seeing is a news broadcast and that its Dan from the boat watching it on TV. He is visibly shaken by what he is seeing and he is crying. His wife asks why he is so upset by it and he says he doesnt know. The news mentions that the name of the boat that the divers are on is Cristian 1. Which sounds pretty similar to Christian – Jacks dad.
Back to present time we see that the helicopter is 4 of them are on is going down and they are having to parachute out and land on the island. Dan seems like a pretty sketchy individual as Jack and Kate find him in the jungle. As they are walking, Kate spots a box from the helicopter. Jack opens it up to find a gas mask and hazard suit. They ask Dan why they have that and he says he doesnt know, he’s not in charge of packing. He then tells them that saving them is not their primary objective. Mile’s GPS transponder then shows up on the phone and they go to look for him. When they find him he is laying on the rocks pretending to be dead. As Jack approaches he jumps up and points a gun at him. He seems pretty upset at the fact that Naomi is dead. He knows she is dead because she gave the code words “tell my sister i lover her” on the phone.
We then get a flashback for Miles where he is at an older black ladys house to do some type of service for her. He tells her it will be 200 dollars instead of the 100 they agreed upon earlier because he found out her grandson had been murdered. As he’s going upstairs to the bedroom to do whatever it is he’s doing we see a picture of a young black kid who is presumably her grandson. He looks strangely familiar – He looked alot like Mr. Ecko did as a kid. Up in the bedroom, Miles takes out his vacuum cleaner. Maybe he’s a maid? He turns it on and sits on the bed and starts shaking in a weird kind of way. He then starts talking to a spirit. Nope not a maid, hes a ghostbuster. He tells the spirit that he’s not doing any good there and is causing a lot of unnecessary stress for his grandma. He then tells him to tell him where it is. Something makes a noise in the corner and Miles go to look. He finds heroin and a big pile of cash hidden. He keeps they money and puts the drugs back. He then tells the spirit to leave. His job is done so he goes down stairs and tells the woman its gone.
Back on the island – Miles demands to be taken to Naomi’s body so he can find out for himself what happen. Apparently hes gonna do some more ghost busting.
We then go to Locke and his crew and he is standing out in the middle of a rainstorm. Hurley tells them they should go find shelter, and Locke says no, its about to end. And as soon as he says it the rain stops. We’ve seen this before at the height of locke’s faith in the island. Apparently it has returned with the recent events. Locke says he has to go to a cabin first and Hurley says he thought it was the other direction. This surprises both Locke and Ben and they both know he saw Jacobs cabin. Ben looks scared while Locke looks almost proud. Sawyer wants to know whats going on and asks who Locke is taking these crazy orders from. Locke says he got them from Walt and that he was suppose to stop Naomi from getting her people on the island. Sawyer thinks hes crazy and Locke tells him that Ben shot him and left him for dead. He then shows him the bullet hole and says the bullet went in one side and out the other, and that if he still had a kidney there he would probably be dead.
Back on the beach Sayid and Juliet are talking and say its taking too long for the boat to show up and they question if the people are who they say they are. They get guns and go to find Jack and Kate. Jack spots them in the woods before anyone else, and tells Miles and Dan they should put their guns down because they are surrounded. Miles doenst believe him and Sayid and Juilet fire a few warning shots. They then go ahead and put their guns down. This scene reminded me immedieatly of when the Losties were in the woods looking for Michael and Walt and the Others have them surrounded. Its almost as if the losties have themselves turned into the others and are intimidating the new comers with guns and force.
Now we get a Charlotte flashback. She is on a archeology dig in the desert and finds the skeleton of a polar bear. Not only is this something weird to find in the desert, but they also find a collar on it with the dharma symbol. Whats even more weird is that Charlotte gives a little smile almost as if she recognizes the symbol and was glad to find it. Back on the island Charlotte has parachuted onto the island and Locke’s group finds her. She tells them about the GPS transponder and says her people will find them. Locke says they dont want to be found and they tie the GPS unit to vincent the dog and send it off into the woods. Jack, Kate, Miles and Dan find the dog and Jack tells them that Locke must have Charlotte.
Time for another flashback. This time its of the helicopter pilot, Frank. He is watching a news broadcast of the plane at the bottom of the ocean. They show the pilots bloated body and say his name. Frank calls the number and tells them thats not his body because he wasnt wearing his wedding ring and he never takes it off. They ask how he knows this information and Frank says because he knew the pilot and that he was suppose to be the one that was flying Oceanic 815 on that day it went missing. Back on the island, we see Frank climbing a hill. There is a big brown cow at the top. This seemed pretty weird to me, but I’m not sure what the meaning of it was. Frank then fires off a flare so that others can find him. Charlotte sees it and tells Locke she’s going to get him. He says no and she gets mad and tries to leave any way. Ben somehow got his hands on a gun, apparently he stole it from Locke without him knowing. He shoots Charlotte in the chest a few times and she drops. Lucky for her shes wearing a bullet proof vest.
Back to Frank. Jack Sayid, Kate and everyone find him. He says the helicopter was struck by lightning but he managed to land it safely in the clearning. He shows it to them and they have a look of relief as they finally can get off the island.
Time for a Naomi flashback. She is speaking with Abaddon (the black guy that speaks with Hurley in the mental institute and asks if they are still alive). He is recruiting Naomi and the other 4 to go to the island and complete a mission. Naomi asks what if they find survivors of oceanic filght 815. So apparently these are the people behind the fake plane at the bottom of the ocean and they know that there are most likely survivors on the island. Abbadan tells her no matter what, there are no survivors of the plane crash. He tells her to complete the mission as planned.
Back on the island, Miles wants the phone back, and Jack tells him he can have it if he tells them why they are on the island. Miles agrees and gets the phone. He calls someone and a woman named Regina answers. He asks to speak to Makowski. Regina tells him he cant come to the phone right now. Not sure why, maybe he was in the bathroom or something. She then says she has to go and hangs up. The whole phone call seemed a little akward, but nothing else was said about it. Meanwhile, Juilet is cleaning up a cut on Franks head. He asks her name and when she tells him, he says “You weren’t on the plane”. He says he studied the manifest so many times that he knows her name was not there. He tells Miles she is a native and Miles demands to know where he is. He pulls out a picture of Ben and says that is why they are on the island. To find Ben.
Back with Lock – Sawyer has a gun to Ben’s head and wants to kill him for shooting Charlotte. Locke seems to agree this time and says he will clean up the mess by killing Ben himself. Ben tells them he has information they need (of course). Locke says OK, then tell me what the black smoke monster is. Ben says he doesnt know and it seems genuine that he doesnt. He then starts rolling of a ton of background information on Charlotte which surprises everyone. He then says he knows why they are on the island, and says its because they are looking for him. Sawyer asks how he knows all this and Ben says “Because I have a man on their boat.” The episode ends with that.
Apparently Ben has a spy on their boat feeding him information. Who could it be? My blind guess in the dark is that it’s Michael. We saw him and Walt depart at the end of Season 2 and havent heard anything about him since. We do know that Michael is scheduled to have some pretty significant screen time in Season 4, and my guess this is it. I dont know why he would be feeding info to Ben, or how he came to be on the boat. But we shall soon find out.
What did you guys think of “Confirmed Dead”?
Popularity: 3% [?]
My guess about Ben’s spy in the boat is Charlotte. I think Ben knew Charlotte was wearing a bullet proof vest when he shoot her (right in the chest). Besides, she seemed really happy when she falled from the tree in the river, as if she was coming back home, a place she wanted to be. In the flashbacks, she is the only one who explicitly know about Dharma initiative before go to the island.
Hi. my first post here. I am from portugal.
I have to agree with Marcelo. Ben knows Charlotte. She is actually the only one of the four (chopper crew) who seemed to know something about the Dharma iniciative.
She also didn´t find weird that a polar bear was found on a desert…
Maybe that desert used to be somekind of Dharma related site?
Remember that Sawyer Killed a Polar bear in the island… And the cages… Weird.
I also find strange that spite all doubt about the real reason why these self called “rescue team” are on the island, even after knowing that their primary objective isn´t the rescue mission, they take it very lightly instead of making them confess more details… I guess we´ll have to wait and see.
By the way…You have great theories and your summarys are perfect. Well done.
So, maybe you can answer these (easy i hope) questions:
I can´t seem to remind his name, but there´s a character that in my opinion is the one who knows most (maybe everything) about the dharma and the island.
It´s the guy who found young Benjamin, and who brought him to the “others” in the first place, when Benjamin ran away to the woods as a child (perhaps in his birthday).
He´s part of Ben´s “staff”. And he doesn´t seem to have aged a single bit!
He seems younger.
And since he told Ben he might could help him, and being much older than Ben, Shouldn´t he be the Leader of the community instead of Ben?
Why is he Ben´s subbordinate???
Sorry for my english.
Congrats and keep up the good job.
I guess you´ll be hearing about me
Hey, I noticed one more thing:
When Miles goes upstairs, we see a picture of a young afro-american. But when Miles goes downstairs, we see that picture in different frame.
All that, I think, was at the same time as Desmond turned the key on the island. So, it substantiate the theory of time travelling and alternative future.
Stasys, that was a great observation!!! The frame is indeed a different one when Miles come down after ghostbusting! I dont’t know what it means, but the time traveling and alternative future theory sounds like a good explanation for that.
Nuno, I also have this feeling that that guy (his name is Richard) is much more important in the plot than we can realize now.
One more thing about Charlotte: I saw this one in another forum. Maybe Charlotte is that blond little girl which seems to be Ben’s best friend when they are both child in the Island.
dude, your summaries are so boring and your use of pronouns get really confusing if you don’t mix them up with names. Reading that summary made the episode seem really bland and could also misconstrue the meanings of certain things because you rarely emphasize the subtle nuances and details that could end up being important to the show. How about some inferences rather than just “this happened, then this happened”
It probably has no significance what so ever but the dead pilot seemed to be the same actor that plays Matt Parkman (the cop) in Heroes
I LOVE THIS REVIEW SITE
KEEP GOING….
..AND JO MAMA DON’T REALLY GETS THE MEANING OF RECAP
Joe Mama – instead of giving me a grammar lesson, how about you take the summary and give your thoughts on the meanings of different events. I put the summaries up because many parts of the world aren’t able to watch season 4 yet as it has not begun airing.
Scott, your recaps are great, descriptive, unbiased, let people think by themselves… Keep going! And thanks for taking part of your time to do that and feed the site and the discussions!
Richard won’t have much of a part to play this season as the actor who played him was offered a leading role in a new show. I believe that show has since been cancelled but the actor has moved on to do some films? Apparently due to his absence Michael’s character was brought back to compensate in the storyline.
The actor who plays Sayid was on a talk show over here and when he was asked how the show was going to progress he said the writers didn’t know what they were doing anymore!! Lets hope thats not true and it keeps up being as interesting as it is now!
The answers to the show Lost can be found in the two films: “The Innoccents”, and “Let’s Scare Jessica To Death”.
At the end of the episode Ben says Charlotte full name: Charlotte Staples Lewis……………C.S Lewis. C.S Lewis (Clive STAPLES Lewis) is the autor of ‘the lion, the witch and the wardrobe’, and ‘Alice in wonderland.’ The island can certainly be linked to both Narnia and Wonderland. Parrallel universes, which are unexplainable and have unexplainable inhabitants (polar bears in jungles?). Its yet another bit of subtle, literary brilliance by the writers. Maybe the losties fell through the wardrobe and ended up on the island!?
Also if you look at C.S Lewis’ biography, what Ben said about Charlottes past, (where she grew up, where she was educated, what she studied etc..) almost exactly mirrors the autors life. They also share the same unusual middle name. I’m not completely sure of the rellevance of these facts, but surely they’re significant ?
Finally, what i found most exciting, was that C.S Lewis also wrote the book, ‘Through the looking glass,’ was that not the name of the final episodes of season three????
MADNESS! It’s Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!
lewis carroll wrote alice in wonderland and looking glass….. gr8 theory tho maybe its liked thro lewis???
well said Scott! Hey Joe Mama, instead of criticizing, why don’t you add some value to the comments of the show?
As for the pilot, i dont watch heroes but i think he appears in the first season and he’s killed by the monster. Its the actor from “felicity”.
Now i have a question. Is Daniel Faraday one of the guys we see at the end of season 1 or 2, that is speaking portuguese in a very cold are, something like an igloo ?? What happened with that, does anyone have a clue ?
You know the way the sentence “God loves you as he loved Jacob” keeps popping up? In the bible Jacob had 12 sons from which came the 12 tribes of Israel, the youngest son was called Benjamin. Jacob became the “father of a nation” through his 12 sons. The Others and Mittelos Bioscience seem to be doing research connected with fertility. Alvar Hanso states on the hanso foundations website that the foundation’s goal is to “bring rebirth to a dying land and a dying people.
Following on from the book themes in Adrian Lynes’ Jacob’s Ladder Tim Robbins plays a Vietnam veteran in a purgatory- like state.
It doesn’t surprise me, that some kid who makes a name like Joe Mamma writes a comment like that. It’s the same ppl no matter the forum.
As for the site this I just found it this season and look forward to reading the recap on Wed./Thurs. in preperation for the new show. Thanks for taking the time to put this up.
apologies for my mistake re: C.S Lewis & Lewis Carroll. I got carried away with what i thought was a very valid theory. Perhaps they’re linked Emma, but i think the Narnia connection is still a very possible outcome.
Lolo, your observation re Jacob, Benjamin and the bible is superb, I love it. Have you also noticed the various biblical references that have been made throughout the programme? In the episode where Eko dies, the whole Yemi’s body missing from the plane incident very much mirrors the ressurection of Christ. Also at the end of series 3 where Juliet has been asked to mark the tents of the pregnant women in the camp, this scene is very much like the story in the bible where (forgive me as my knowledge of the bible isn’t what it should be) a red mark is used to to mark the doors of homes with babies. I’m pretty sure its something to do with moses and him saving the hebrews? Anyway it is a definate biblical link.
Does anyone think that the flashbacks of Dan, Miles, Charlotte and Frank could actually be flashforwards?
I say this as Charlottes Flash shows her discovering a polar bear in the desert and a dharma sign and it doesn’t confuse her. She recognised the sign to?
The flight-route on TV news was westward. Isn’t it strange that an airplane flies west to reach LA departing from Sydney and gets found at the bottom of the indian ocean? It should be somewhere in the pacific I guess…
The grandmother’s name w gardener does this have any significance ??
i cant watch lost because i do not have the chanal… please could you email me what hapens next i would much apreshate it er… my names sophie im 14 from england an i love lost i have all the dvds cant waite till seson 4 comes out then ill watch them all hehe : ) my fave person is claire i dont know why just is whats yours ?? well thats all i have to say rilly just write back yer ! thanks

Hi everybody, I’ve only seen episode 1-2 so far of Lost 4.
I really think that Charlotte is the little girl, the only friend of Ben during the very beginning of the Dharma iniciative on the island (the one who gave Ben the little wood statue). She is the Ben’s informer in the boat! She were looking for signals of the Dharma I. across the world, and she found it on the desert, and Ben, even if is a tough guy, couldn’t have killed her with the toxic gas (as for his father).
Think about it.

FYI… no need to wait to hear what happens. You can watch the episodes on the ABC website.

Hey, I haven’t seen the third episode yet so I don’t know if this was further talked about but I wonder if the people from the helicopter weren’t somehow related to the original Hanso/Dharma thing. That guy Miles looks as if he could be a child of Marvin Candle a.k.a. Mark Wickmund a.k.a. Edgar Halowax from the orientation videos. Naomi emphasised the team as a motley crew and bad choice of people. Were they recruited because of family ties to the original inhabitants? Perhaps they are there on some sort of revenge mission or to regain control of the island from Ben and resume experiments. I dunno, just a theory I wanted to share. Loving the new episodes.
I really enjoyed the recap cos right now am far from my TV set and this blog site and helped me to get back on track on the happenings of Lost 4. This is because we the viewers are also Losties considering the fact that the writers try to make things more interesting by adding intriguing and captivating trailers as the episodes goes on, that’s good though as it makes Lost even more interesting. I didn’t really the part that talked Naomi’s flashback. Does anyone really have a clue to back up and enlighten me legislatively as i give him the mandate to hit me with the 411 about her flashback. Thanks
i believe that jack and kate shud b together its enough jack has aced too many hardships he shud get kate
the thing about this episode is that I could not really tell if the stories off the island were flashbacks or flashfowards. Actually, I´m starting to question all the so called flashbacks so far.
To me, Dan´s story seems like a flashfoward. He seems upset about what he knows happened. Or, he might just have been assigned for the mission and knows that the plaine in the ocean is staged.
As to Charlotte, I thougth her smile when she sees the bear was because she had already been in the island and so I belived it was I flashfoward. But I loved the teory that she is the blond girl (although to me she seems a lot younger than Ben but it probably doesn matter: just look at richard) and she´s doing reaserach for Ben.
As for Frank, I though it was a flashback, and that´s probably why the ended up taking that mission…
very confusing. loved it.
ps: Pardon my writting. I´m brazilian.
Sorry friends … young Ben’s friend name is Annie, not Charlotte. (check s3-ep20)
