There is an article over on YahooTV with an interview of Damon Lindelof, and the brunt of the conversation turns to “Why Charlie had to die!” Here’s the interesting part regarding Charlie:
You’re a bastard for killing Charlie
Lindelof: [Laughs.] True.
Can we talk about that? ‘Cause, oh my god, you killed Charlie, and we fans need to know why.
Lindelof: Yes, of course. Dominic, Carlton and I, and all the writers, really felt that when Charlie threw his Virgin Mary statues into the water last year, that was the end of his addiction arc. We weren’t interested in revisiting it and having him bounce between being drunk and being sober, so we began to really struggle with the idea of what was Charlie to play now. How was he going to evolve as a character?Lindelof:At the very same time, we were starting to think about what the effect of the second season finale was going to be, with Desmond turning the fail-safe key. And we didn’t want to kill off Desmond, but because this fail-safe key existed as sort of a last resort, we wanted there to be really severe ramifications for Desmond turning it. We didn’t want him to get a free pass. And we felt that it would be cool if it involved time travel in some way. But instead of doing sort of a traditional time travel and creating paradoxes and all that stuff, we just did [the episode] “Flashes Before Your Eyes.” When that experience ended, we wanted him to be able to see the future, and we thought it would be cool if [his visions] always kind of related to Charlie and Charlie’s death, as opposed to seeing 50 different things. That way, he would struggle all season with the idea of whether or not Charlie’s death was inevitable.
Why Charlie?Lindelof: We felt that would be a really interesting story for Desmond. But the way it would affect Charlie excited us even more. We thought it would make Charlie enormously heroic. He is a character who I think the audience has really liked, and he has, during the course of the show, demonstrated real heroism. Like when he killed Ethan for example. At the end of season two, we realized that if there was any character on the show who would sacrifice their life so that everyone else could be rescued, that would be Charlie. What we hadn’t decided though, was whether or not Charlie was actually going to die.
So, when did you actually decide to kill him?
Lindelof: Over the course of the year, we began to execute the story, and it was really working. I mean we just loved writing for Charlie. He had this whole new thing to play, and we loved how Dominic was working with Ian [Cusick]. Even with Hurley’s more light-hearted story, Charlie’s impending death gave it real gravitas. It was just a great storyline, and we were thinking, Is there a way for us to have our cake and eat it too? Can we continue prophesying Charlie’s death but not actually have him die, just have him willing to die? But we kind of got to the point—I guess it was during the writing of “The Brig”—where we were all just talking in the writers room and we realized it’s a cheat if he lives. It wouldn’t be fair, because we’ve made such a big story point out of it that Charlie now has to die. If he is going to accept his death, then he has to die. Otherwise, it’s like, why did we do this story at all? We can’t just let him off the hook. He has to die.
How did you break the news to Dominic?
Lindelof: You know, obviously, we started talking to him before we wrote “Flashes Before Your Eyes,” just so he would know what was coming. We told him that as soon as we knew definitively what Charlie’s fate was going to be, he’d be the first to know. And when we made the final decision, we called him and had a very reasonable conversation. He was completely understanding and appreciative and accepting.
On a personal level, was it a difficult decision letting him go?
Lindelof: Enormously. When you reflect back on the pilot, it was really Jack, Kate and Charlie’s story. They’re the three people you experience the crash with. They’re the original sort of three amigos who go tromping out into the jungle. I think Dominic is, along with Jorge, really the heart of the show. And the idea of how would the show feel with Charlie not being in it anymore, that was a very dark tunnel to be looking down and it continues to be. But I think the reality is, after 72 hours of Lost, we have the idea of communicating to the audience that it’s not just the Shannons and Boones and Paulos and Ekos and Ana Lucias who are vulnerable. Everybody is vulnerable. Not everybody’s going to make it to the end of this journey. I think that was an important story point to make.
Are you expecting that there is going to be any sort of fan backlash over this?
Lindelof: I hope so. I mean that honestly. I think that if people are like “we’re glad you did it,” that means we didn’t do a good job of emotionally bonding the audience to Charlie and making them feel like his sacrifice is really tragic and heartbreaking. But Dom’s work has been phenomenal, and in the last two episodes, he raised the bar even higher. And that’s not just a producer trying to be generous to an actor who has now left the show. I think the proof is in the proverbial pudding. I really hope that all summer long, I am derided by people for doing this, because it’ll mean that it meant something.
I wavered on whether or not I liked Charlie at times I did but at times he was annoying. He seemed like a hopeless romantic at times but a nut job at others, I guess thats what people liked about him from a character standpoint.

That time when I first saw Charlie was like going to “died” i instantly cried! There’s no way he’s gonna die just like that and locked himself up! gawd, it’s so UNFAIR!
I mean, he’s one of the main characters and he was one of a weird singer, but still, he has a great potential ways, being around with Claire and Aaron especially.. Wow, please don’t just end Charlie. I believe millions of people would have the same thought here saying, “Don’t wipe Charlie off the show! Charlie committed suicide, otherwise its unexplainable. The Lost script is way too smart for this crap. Given the transmission blockage was disabled and you are calm enough to write a bloody sentence in your hand….
Just run out of the dam room and swim away the way you came, you have more than enough time before the station floods….. if you want to save the station try to close the dam door once outside the firkin room…. If you find it exiting to lock yourself in the room, the window that blew in is large enough to fit a camel through…… and if you really like danger, a pocket of air will form above the blown window as long as the station doesn’t tilt…. then swim out the camel sized window. I can’t believe I’m writing this!
I’m really pissed about Charlie’s death.It seems that producers don’t want any relationships between charecters to succeed. First….relationship between Shannon and Sayid…they were in love in eachother….but producers killed Shannon (Relationship failed,their love didn’t succeed)….Then: Hurley and Libby (I was so happy for Hugo and Libby)….but no…..Libby had to die…..and now: Charlie and Claire (finaly,Charlie kissed Claire and everybody’s happy)…but no….their love didn’t make it too….why? Because the producers had to kill Charlie…..damn. Producers said that they had to kill him cuz they didn’t know what would Charlie play next,why would he be interesting and involved in the situation.Well I guess they thought the same for Libby and Shannon.But now Hurley,Sayid and Claire are useless in the show.There is nothing going on with them now (I mean they are sad and miserable) so I think that the writers by killing Shannon,Libby and Charlie just because they became “useless” they made Sayid,Hurley and Claire almost useless.They suppose to be meant for eachother,and we fans really enjoyed in their happyness and love.I just hope that there will be no deaths like that anymore (I’m gonna kill somebody if there will)

If you don’t have major tragedies and unexpected outcomes, the show becomes predictable AND eventually boring because of the predictibilty factor!
Let the writers do their job, and that’s to write stories that we, the viewers, would never dream of!
Charlie is dead – deal with it,deal with your emotions and move on with the story … LOST is GREAT series, and remember that after all is said and done, it’s just a TV show.

PS: I’m going to re-watch the final episode, but how could you tell that it was a flash forward? I know Jack said “we have to go back”, but that could have meant many things … Was there anything that came on the screen that said “2 weeks from today” or words to that affect, or ?

Altho the flash forward revealed only 6 people got off the island, the flash forward did not indicate how FAR in the future they flashed, so don’t expect to Jack and Kate removed from the show anytime soon – if EVER!
And it appears as tho the person in the casket must be Sawyer … Being the person he was prior to the crash – a con man with no friends – and the fact that his parents were already dead, that would explain why there was no one there at his wake …
Also, I can only hope that that was Charlie’s last visit to the show – since he’s dead, let him GO!
It’s too bad that the writers strike will make for only a 6 episode season …
I can’t say that I was exactly excited as much AFTER the season Premier as I was BEFORE it …
Things like Naomi crawling away with only 1 person noticing, hiding her tracks, doubling back, climbing a tree to jump on Kate – all with a fatal knife wound in her back – is just pathetic writing in my humble opinion

We knew about the visions since the beginning of the season, so they wouldnt let him die. This made the story not as good, and I loved the story of Claire and Charlie.

The flash of Jin buying a panda is a flash back NOT a flash forlward. I think the real question with Jin is was he buried or was it just a tombstone on an empty grave Sun visited? He may have died on the island so it could make sense that he is not oceanic 6 if you get what i mean.
I agree that it could be Sawyer dead at the funeral but i also had a bit of a different thought. As we dont know the order of all the flashforlwards, i thought the funeral may have been Bens. He has no one off the island so that could explain the no visitors thing…
Finally, i disagree that the writing has suffered as we have finally had a Korean episode that did not bore me, Michael is back and full of surprises and it seems that alex has been captured by the guys from the ship.
The only downside is that it seems danielle rousou and Karl are both dead, i think that is a waste. Especially rousou as i have been looking forlward to her possible flash backs for ages but i guess they will never happen now.

As far as this season’s writing is concerned, I compare them via my interest level … in season’s past, I couldn’t stand waiting week to week to see what awaited, hence, I rented each season in their entirety to solve that “waiting anxioty” – This year, to me at least, it’s like, well, if it’s on, it’s on – if not, it doesn’t bother me 1 way or the other and I just watch from week to week, so, to me, it’s lost something – no pun intended – but again, that’s just my feeling ..

Charlie was defiantly my favorite character, and i HATE that they killed him off, especially with the baby and Claire still there.
There was this one scene, from the second season i think, when lock was being pushed throw an airport by Boon in one of his visions, and he had to fined out which one of the people on the island he had to save. It ended up being himself, but the point is, Charlie, Clare, and the baby was in that airport, in that vision, and they looked so happy. Its such a bummer, no, its just plain unfair that they killed him before he had a chance to be with Claire, they should have at least made some really wonderful moments between Claire, Charlie and the baby before he went, some really memorable moments. I highly doubt he is coming back, as much as i want him to, they made the big, sad,traditional, depressing moment of his death which indicates that he wont be coming back
I hope they give him some serious flashbacks, something that really reflects on how much he brightened up the story.
I’ll miss charlie, and Dominic’s brilliant acting.

You know what would have been nice for us Charlie fans? Since Claire had to go off with someone, it could have been Charlie instead of her father.

seriously! charlie is willing to RISK HIS LIFE for claire and aaron and wat does he get? Claire only cries for ONE minute of ONE episode!!!! After that, she seems NORMAL almost HAPPY even! Shouldn’t she be MOURNING? the writers seriously need help with their writing. LOST has gone downhill. Seriously! Shannoon cried for lik, 10000 episodes after boone died and he was only on the show for HALF A SEASON! Charlie was on it for THREE and he only gets ONE episode where lik, THREE people cry about him? AAANND why on EARTH did they write it so Claire walked off with her FATHER ((whom she HARDLY knew)) instead of CHARLIE!!!! i mean, her and charlie SUPPOSEDLY fell in love! Recent episodes, however, are making me wonder if Charlie loved Claire and if she really couldn’t care LESS! DAMN. I was just thinking what the heck was the DS ring and the letter for? Claire never found the ring and Desmond NEVER gave the letter to Claire. It’s so annoying. If Claire will never find it then what were those things for??!! And Desmond also said that Aaron AND Claire will be rescued but only Aaron gets to be rescued…HEY!!!! LINDELOFF AND CUSE!!! I love Charlie…Idk if I’m gonna watch anymore of the show…why not kill off a criminal, like Kate instead of sugarcoating her crimes? It was a very good move killing off Ana Lucia in the past though…I hate Michelle rodriguez shes a horrible actress
If I had to pick a favourite character it would be Charlie or Claire…adn this affects them both majorly. Charlie’s life was just turning around. With Clair and the baby. That episode with his top 5 moments…that was so heart warming. I’m so absolutely gutted I just can’t really acceot he’s really gone. His death was heroic and tragic and so avoidable…
I love Charlie. I cried when he died and it felt like a big massive hole had been ripped out of my stomach. I can understand your reasons for killing him off – but it was such a shame. It should have been Juliet – I still cannot trust her…

a pity charlie had to die. at first i didnt like him. him and his ‘you are everybody’. but he really got to me as the show went on. his accent is cute. i will miss him.

I think that Charlie’s death was better this way than any other way. I mean yeah he was my favorite character and i was always happy to see him and claire. And i hated to see him go. But at least he died this way, instead of drowning when trying to catch a bird for claire, or setting off a trap in the jungle that put a spear through his throat.
