Who was in the casket in the Season 3 Finale

Heres a pretty good screenshot of the newspaper Jack was holding with the article about who died and was in the casket at the funeral home. The name looks something like J_____ _antham. I cant think of anyones name that starts with a J except Jack Juliet and Jacob, and I’m not sure what Juliete’s lastname is.

On another note, what if the ending wasnt a flash forward to the present, but the whole show is taking place in the present and the island scenes are FLASHBACKS?

    john locke?

  2. ejny13

It says “man found ___ downtown LA.” It does NOT say “WOMAN FOUND.”

  3. ejny13

    Juliette’s last name is BURKE.

  4. Scott

good call, that leaves only Jacob that I can think of. There’s no telling who it could be though.

  5. Sawyer

    Isn’t Sawyer’s real name James?

  6. Evan

    James Sawyer
    John Locke
    Jack Shepard
    Jacob
    Jin

all the men who start with J

  7. ejny13

Good point…The island scenes could be flashbacks. Since they crashed in 2004, it’s quite possible that they were rescued months later in that same year. Proof that they have not been on the island more than a year: Claire’s baby-Not more than 1 year old. One of the characters also said that they’ve been on the island for 80 something days. We’ll have to wait and see.

  8. Craig

Remember that Sawyer’s last name is not Sawyer, and that he took it from the man who killed his mother (John Locke’s father)

I don’t think James is dead however because I think Kate and Sawyer are together.

  9. dr_chandler

that cant be flash forwards because the others have all the files on the people on the island and those files match 2 the past and the flashbacks

  10. becki

i think it could either be Jacob or Sawyer

  11. yo

the name doesn’t start with a j. the “j” is acutally a “s” in the 2nd sentence that says shortly after

  12. Scott

Right you are. Back to being completely clueless.

  13. Jean

Is a men not a women. So juliet is not the dead one. It said in the newspaper “man found dead”

  14. thomas

man, not necessarily beginning with a “j”, died in LA, in a loft, just shortly after 4am.

    Maybe it’s Mikhail ;)

  15. pacal

Is Mikhail dead or not? I think he had to die because the hand grenade blew up in his hand.

  16. Elene

i think that its one of the bad guys, because in the funeral nobody appeared. maybe its Bob and not someone whos name starts with “J”???

  17. greeklostfan

It might be Ben because at the funeral noone showed up(he didnot now anyone in the real world)

  18. fastwriter

It’s James Ford, not James Sawyer. Personally, I think the paper is shot at an angle that makes it impossible to tell… but my guess from looking at that is Jacob. Looking very closely, it looks like it could be J______ _antham. Let’s keep an eye out next year to see what Jacob’s last name turns out to be! :)

  19. rob

Looking at the Article Screenshot, It seems to say:
“Man found dead in downtown LA. The body of ???? ??????? of New York was found shortly after 4 A.M. to the ????? of ???? ?????.

  20. seb

The name seems to have an “o” after the J so I think it might be John Locke. Kate says “Why would I want to go(to the funeral)” so maybe Locke does something that none of Losties likes later on. And it could be him because before Locke got on the flight he was alone in the world no one to go to the funeral.

  21. Oracle

I do not think that it was the death of Jacob. I am quite certain that it is a character who is close to Kate and Jack. And it had to be a character involved in the season finale. My 3 guesses are:

    John Locke
    James Sawyer Ford
    Benjamin Linus

I am also taking a shot in the dark and say the Kate eventually gave birth to a son after leaving the island.

  22. Brage

The article doesn’t say the word dead, and it doesn’t say the word found after “New York was ….”. The writers of lost in the past haven’t given anything away via elementary problem solving, so I dont think they have now. It could be the body of a man, woman, plane wreck survivor, Other, or someone not even involved with the island. For instance it could be that the “Man” mentioned is still alive and is the one who found the body. It’s a work of fiction, sleuthing is kind of pointless since any work of someone’s imagination with no factual evidence to “sleuth” has the ability to be bullshit, fragranced bullshit that is fun to watch…but still trying to solve whose “body” is being discussed is pointless since the article really gives no actual clues except for what you have seen in the episode. Jack attends a funeral by himself. Someone died, and the article talked about it. That’s all you can surmise.

  23. Brage

It’s also possible that Jack killed someone, and hid their body. He has been haunted by the murder and thus became alcoholic. They finally discover the body after he has been running from the reality of what he did by flying thousands of miles. The reality catches up to him via the article, he thinks about killing himself but the wreck intervenes. And instead he goes to the funeral to face what he did. Just for instance.

  24. Scott

^isnt that the same pointlessness as trying to figure who was in the casket?

  25. Brage

yes, thats my point, theories about fiction are pointless. Youd have to know the writers personally to make any sort of intelligent guess.

  26. Emily

There is actually a hint as to how long the “losties” have been on the island and it seems to have been a while. You are given the impression that all of this takes place over a couple months but then why when locke has an encounter with the little kid when he’s in the ditch after he’d been shot, does the kid look a couple years older? I think the person who died is John or jacob because i reckon kate and sawyer are together that’s why she’s in such a rush to get home at the end so he’s not dead. if jin was dead sun would definitely be there and the rest of them are a little irrelevant. Also we know that the time period at the end where jack talks to kate is after the plane crash because she asks him “still pulling people out of burning wreckage” which is meant from the first day of the plane crash when he pulled all the other people away from the burning wreckage of the crash.

  27. Olivia

Im thinking it’s Micheal’s funeral. It was in an African-American community, Jack is neigther a friend nor family because Michael betrayed them (same goes with Kate not wanting to see him), and it would make sense with the whole Walt-talking-to-John thing when he is in the pit.
Thats the best theory i have so far on the funeral

  28. tricia

I can’t be Jacob, is he even real, I mean why would he ask Locke for help, if he is some kind of spirit, then he is dead already. It has to be Sawyer or Locke. Kate said that she need to go back to him, that him doesn’t have to be Sawyer, if you remember the last episode Sawyer wasn’t acting like himself and Kate wasn’t very happy about it. Besides Locke and Sawyer are all by themself not family members left.

  29. Careca

The name on the paper is perfectly readable. It’s J.Bentham of New York. Another philosopher after Rousseau and Locke…

  30. selin

    wait and see

  31. selin

his funeral nobody coming. why ?? who is he ?? maybe : john locke
not james (sawyer) he is waiting kate them hause :) maybe of course ı dont know :)

  32. Lucy

It’s not J.Bentham of New York because on the newspaper the 2nd letter is “A” or “O” so….i don’t know. i rekon its sawyer as kate said “why would i wana go to the funeral?”… as if to say shes past caring. althooouughh the way she said “he’l be wondering where i am” i think maybe shes married sawyer..oh i dnno! i’m confused

  33. craig t

lol u guys are nuts lol !!!
u no hte writers read this stuff and base the storyline round what we say. my take on it is that the island is just a vision of a mentle person playin out serveral different parts like that thriller film from i think 2000 cant remember the title tho. OR if not its a vision someone gets before they get on the plane and the last series the last episode will be that person trying to get off the plane with a chilling enigma ending!!!! anyone agree?

  34. gavin g

its James Latham (Sawyer) heres why…

Sawyer shows back up and has changed his name to James Latham. He tells Kate to stop looking for him and to pretend he is still on the island. Kate calls Jack and she is very upset about Sawyer and how he was acting. Jack tells her that he is in love with her and always has been. Kate says, “this was a mistake, I shouldn’t have called you, don’t try to contact me.”
So here’s where things get REALLY interesting. Obviously Latham (Sawyer) was SUPPOSED to be in the coffin, however it was another con, and had Jack opened the coffin he would not have recognized the man inside. Sawyer took the name Latham because; remember the episode “the Long Con” Sawyer fell in love with a woman he was conning, but was eventually forced to con her or else they would both be killed. Kate later met this woman, and they became friends. Well, because Latham dies “the long con” woman is going to get all her money back that she lost to Sawyer’s con. Latham is the alias of the man who made Sawyer con the woman that he loved! Sawyer kills him and HE is in the coffin!

  35. Lesane

    My ideas:
    1. Locke stayed on the island, so he isn´t in the coffin.
    2. Juliet left Jack, because his ex-wife visit him after the car-accident. If she were his girlfriend, she may picked him up after the crash, but she didn´t.. And she isn´t a man, so she isn´t in the coffin.
    3. Jacob is not real und Kate didn´t ever saw him, so why should Jack show her the article of the dead person.
    4. Why should Saywer still be together with Kate? After he killed Locke´s father he got changed… and maybe he told Kate about that. She left him after the arrival because he is a murderer..So he is in the coffin.
    5. Why would Ben leave his island? Jack said, he would kill him before the boat will arrive — Ben is allready dead..

    6. The dead man has his funeral in a poor district, where only black people live….
    - it could be michael, but kate was angry after jack showed the article: “why would i wana go to the funeral?”. So the person has to be very close to them both and has to hurt her maybe…

  36. Lucy

I rekon because they said something like “we shouldn’t have done it!, i can’t keep on lying”…I Think Jack and Kate may have killed someone and they are hiding it from police. Jack wants to go to funeral coz he feels guilty. Kate says “why would i wanna go?” because she DOESNT feel guilty. but who could it be? i don’t think Locke would have left the island..it magically makes him walk-why would he wanna go back to the wheelchair if he had a choice. I Think Kates married to Sawyer..so i have NO idea who is in the coffin lol. mayb a complete randomer that we don’t even know about till the next series…

  37. greg

Jack & Kate made it back. Jack is haunted by guilt over the circumstances of his return and is obsessed with returning to the island to make up for the lies he’s been living with since he came back. One of those lies involved the funeral he attended. He may feel the need to save everyone who didn’t make it home and/or to save the island’s secrets. Kate has mixed feelings but doesn’t want to make things any worse than what they might be.

  38. ALEX

Artz is in the casket! Duh! :P

  39. Ed

When Jack goes to the funeral home, he is asked, “Friend or Family?” He said “Neither”.

I find it hard to believe that he wouldn’t consider Sawyer or Locke a friend, with everything that they’ve been through.

I’m guessing it’s Jacob or one of the others.

  40. Phil

its Micheal, reason being that nobody turned up to pay respects and the are no refferences to Micheal having any family apart from Walt in any previous episodes.

  41. JJ

I think it is Ben. This is because at the nend jack says thaey have to get back to the island.
Ben would be the only one who could get them bakc and when jakck finds out he is dead, he wants to kills himslfe by jumping off the bridge because he knows they need to get back. he says neither friend or family and ben isn’t and kate would not want to got the funeral as she would hate ben and not want t o get bakc to the idsland.

    OR

Jack relaise s ben was right about all opf them being killed by the poelpel supposed to be rescuing them. He feels guilty and wants to get back to the island. IN this case i don’t knwo who is in the casket.

  42. JustMe

Don’t get too focus on Jack said ‘neither’ when asked about ‘friend or family’.. He could be lying that time..
The last episode is really confusing, but i will stick to the idea that the current story is on the island… Because if it isn’t, then sack the damn director who shoot this ‘lost series’ cuz he has no idea on how to shoot a drama…

  43. Jon

    righty i see a J…. ..antham

also later on in the obituary i see it mentions ‘loft noises’, was he goin crazy ?

and i see ‘beam on the’…. just guessing he hung himself on a beam in the loft :S

my vote is that it that its locke, cos he may have gotten moody from leaving the island, maybe become retarded again ?

  44. Jezzie

kate’s response (“why would i go”) is interesting. i’m betting it’s sawyer because jack knows of her history with him, yet they’ve had a falling out — hence kate’s defensive reply.

  45. Lostified

I’m with whoever said it was Michael. It fits.

    1) Michael is from New York, which matches that part of the obituary.

    2) It would have to be someone close to Kate and Jack, but not someone they couldn’t forgive. I think they all hated what Michael did, but on another level understood.
    3) Michael would have definitely been off the island, having left before Kate and Jack.

On the subject of Jack saying he can’t lie anymore – easy one. There’s no way they would have been allowed to get off the island and live unless they promised to keep it a secret. I know that there’s the Other – Other’s now (the ones Ben says not to trust), so I assume they are monitoring Kate and Jack.

I don’t care if some people think the interest in the show is a bit much. Like no other TV show before, this one has INTELLIGENT and twisting plots. People are looking up details on philosophers and scientific phenomenon. We’re not just sitting watching someone shoot people or shag.

  46. JS

One thing I don’t think anyone has pointed out yet is the possible length of the name that could fit in the space. Assuming the line below reads “…New York was found dead shortly after 4…”, one can align the letters of the line above, where the mystery name seems to be written, and get a ballpark for the length.

Using standard font/spacing in Word, or some other program, and checking afterwards that the observed relational positions of the two lines match at the start and end, it appears the the space between the “J” and the “antham” is 15 characters. One of them would be a space separator, so I’d say we’ve got about 14 characters to work with.

That means, if I am correct and if my assumptions are valid, we’re looking for a character with about 21 letters in his two names. If his middle name is written too, then there needs to be another space separator, which would give about 20 letters over three names.

  47. Lostified

Michael Dawson has 14 characters counting the space between first and last name. Don’t know if there’s a middle name given for him, but throw in something typical like “David” or “Paul” and that gets us closer to 21.

  48. Marcelle

Come on.. it’s impossible to read what’s written on the paper. Do you think they would play it with the name of the dead guy (or woman) showing up? The best we can do is wait until the 4th. season gets started.
Ohh.. I really HOPE Sawyer and Kate are marriege, or at least, living together..

  49. Anon

Go back and look at the casket. The casket is very small in relation to jack as he stands over it, almost kid size.

  50. Paticimo

It is WalT!!! He changes his name remeber and the casket is small, and he doesn’t have any family other than his grandma. And Jack said neither because he does not want to consider himself a friend of Walt, some one he let down. Or he doesn’t want to remember the horrors that the boy must have gone through. I’m confused????

  51. Henry Zhang

    John’s father
