There is an article over on YahooTV with an interview of Damon Lindelof, and the brunt of the conversation turns to “Why Charlie had to die!” Here’s the interesting part regarding Charlie:

One thing I forgot to mention in my season 3 finale post was the connection or lack of connection between Penelope (Desmonds’ Girl), Naomi, the parachute girl and the boat (if there is one).
When Charlie was talking to Penny, she said “what boat?” meaning she was not connected to Naomi’s boat like Naomi has [...]
