The Reoccurances of 4 8 15 16 23 42
We get tons of comments on our posts here at The Lost Review, and there are continuous new notices of places these numbers are showing up through out the show. For this reason, I’ve decided it would be good idea to centralize all of those occurances, just because I think its interesting how the writers of Lost seem to be sneeking the numbers in all over the place.
So we need your help in listing all places you’ve noticed the numbers. I’ll start the list below with a few of the ones I can remember off the top of my head, I know there has to be a ton more I’ve missed, so leave them in the comments.
- Hurley’s Lottery Ticket
- Engraved on the hatch
- Numbers that entered into the computer
- when Hurleys car stops in the Season 1 finale. When Hurley’s car broke down they showed the speedometer (in km/h) go from 16 to 15 to 8 to 4. The dashboard also displayed a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and 42 km on the odometer.
- When Hurley rides past 6 players of a girls’ soccer team in the airport, each uniform has one of the numbers.
Interesting huh. - Seat numbers of the passangers on the plane
- Forty-eight passengers survived in the fuselage section of the plane.
- The numbers have to be entered every 108 minutes (the sum of all the numbers)
- The real Henry Gale’s address is 815 Walnut Ridge Road.
- Ana-Lucia identifies her squad car as 8A15.
- The time of death for Adam Rutherford was 8:15 a.m.
- The cassette tape that Kate and Tom find in the capsule is dated 8/15/89.
- The model number on the copier that Charlie attempts to demonstrate is C815.
- Kate gets the toy plane from safe deposit box number 815.
- The Oceanic plane that crashed had a flight number of 815.
- 1516 is the number of the safety deposit box where Locke retrieves his father’s money.
- 108 appears when Jack is in the corridor of the hatch. It’s on the mural in the background.
- The numbers appear on the bottle of the meds that Desmond takes.
- The numbers appear on the medicine vials that Claire remembers in her abduction recollections.
- There are 48 seconds left on the timer when Desmond wakes and Kelvin is below the hatch, drunk, with the security system key.
- The Tailies met the fuselage group on the 48th day.
- # The Apollo candy bar expires on the 23rd of an unknown month in 2004.
I know there are a whole lot more, so start listing any places you’ve noticed the numbers.

Check out this place Scott. It has heaps of appereances like:The hatch is producing some sort of evil weapon:
4= Beryllium (Be) — Powdered beryllium is extremely toxic!
8= Oxygen (O) — If carbon is the foundation of life, oxygen is the fuel
15= Phosphorus (P) — Phosphorus is all about fire
16= Sulfur (S) — Sulfur is the element of war and is one of three ingredients in gunpowder
23= Vanadium (V) — Vanadium as an impurity gives the green color to many pretty gemstones (Green flash)
42= Molybdenum (Mo) — The melting point of molybdenum is a good 1000C higher than steel and used as laser (!) applications.
If this is true could relate to hatches: Beryllium, the outside (quarantine signs on doors) Oxygen, the staff (medical centre) Phosphorus, the flame Sulfur, the arrow (both to do with war) Vanadium, the pearl (pearls and gems both valuable) and Molybdenum, the swan (strong and tough (like the concrete wall))

I think that all of the main characters seats were in rows 4,8,15,16,23,42. Someone should check that fact tho.
Jae’s hotel room number when Jin came to kill him was 1516
In "Every Man For Himself" (Season 3) The rabbit that Ben torments until it dies/passes out has the number 8 spray painted on it (for whatever reason?!)
Now we know 6 get off the island i.e. Sayid, Jack, Hurley have all said “I’m one of the Oceanic 6 survivors from Oceanic Flight 815…” maybe the numbers relate to the seat numbers of those who make it off the island?
Although I’ve no idea if there is access to the flight manifest anywhere to prove it - and find out who the other 2 are that get off the island are (In addition to the 3 above, we’ve seen Kate at LAX with Jack - but no explanation why she isn’t in prison and Jack refers to them both getting the ‘golden pass’ free flights) We’ve seen Desmond get in the helicopter so could be him plus Ben forcing Sayid to be some sort of hitman and as the submarine was blown up, Ben may have pretended to be a survivor. As we’ve seen Ben, it must be Locke in the coffin at end of Season 3; the clipping says “a man was found” and Jack describes it as someone who is neither “friend or family” and when he says to Kate, he thought he might see her there - she reacts badly as if it’s the last place she’d want to be).
