Desmond entered the race because he said he wanted to win back his honour. What better what to do it than to enter a race associated to Charles Widmore?

Widmore may or may not have engineered his entering of the race but he certainly engineered him getting a boat (via Libby) and getting shipwrecked on the island.

The Portuguese guys at the South Pole(?) seemed concerned that they may have missed 'it' again. It's not clear whether the magnetic anomaly they missed 1st time was what caused the aeroplane to crash because that apparently was when Desmond was late entering the numbers. Only that time the failsafe wasn't triggered. The 2nd time the Portuguese guys noticed the anomaly was when the failsafe was triggered.

My thoughts on the guys looking for Desmond are these:

#1. He had to enterthe race, which he did AFTER he was given the boat.

#2. Penny could have had someone plant a tracking device on the boat and paid two blokes to live in that hellishly cold place keeping an eye on him.

#3. He dissappeared, due to the magnetics of the island.

#4. When the button wasn't pushed, the boat showed up, and when the key was turned it showed up again, long enough to get a fix on it.

Also i believe the polar location is very significant because we are dealing with magnetic abnormalities and where better to monitor activity than there? I have not fully got my brain round this yet in as much as hows and whys but is it possible that the Island is contained in some kind of Bio-dome? as on the cover of Hurleys comic and when desmond returns to the island on his boat after sailing for weeks he says that there is no escape and that it was like sailing around in a snow-globe!!!

if you remember Penelopes father is a very wealthy businessman and was trying to pay off Desmond to stay away from her. The boat race Desmond enters (organised by Penelopes Fathers company) to win money from him is fake. I believe it was a ploy by Penelopes father to get rid of Desmond for good, by having him end up on the Island. How would he know about the island? Its because his corporation is a partner of Dharma and is in charge of the experiments on the island. Penelope finds out about her father getting rid of Desmond and investigates further and discovers details about the companys activities on the island. This i think is the only valid way she would know to look for abnormal magnetic displacement as a means to find Desmond as this is the basis of activity on the island.
